Do you think it's because of the rise of the UFC and more exciting/action packed fights?

Less talent in all divisions?

I'm saying this because that Hayes/Klitch fight was pathetic and I was looking forward to seeing someone sleep in that one.......

It's become less watchable than soccer IMO.

Don King and Pay-Per-View. Boxing started to go downhill after those two things started to get involved. The lower divisions actually aren't that bad but the heavyweights have been atrocious for the last 30 years save for a brief period in the early '90s when it had Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis and Bowe. I remember Burt Sugar making the remark that Ray Lewis would probably be the best heavyweight boxer in the world if he had chosen that sport instead of football so the increased athletic competition is another reason.

UFC has plenty of boring fights

There are quite a few divisions that are packed with talent

one fight doesn't make a sport boring.. There have been plenty of UFC fights where all I see is one guy on his back with his legs spread and the other guy on top of him thoughout the whole fight.

advancement of the sport

esp in the HW division

most sports advance to a defensive, safe approach, which often is not as aesthetically pleasing as an offensive approach

Mayweather/PAC would bring a lot of interest back.. if only for a day.

Well maybe that's what boxing's trying to do here. Build up the fight so much and make it seem like it's never going to happen.

Everything's a conspiracy.

After watching the fight this weekend, it is easy to tell why most boxing fans now watch MMA

it still won't touch the comparable HW fight, if that could even exist today

losing the excitement of the HW class is what's hurting boxing. your average joe doesn't care much for smaller classes

Lack of great personalities in boxing plus too long between fights for fans to really get into it. People want to see fights much sooner nowadays and just arent patient enough to wait.

Boxing killed itself long ago, but mma/UFC finished it off several years ago.....

The number of good athletes going into boxing is probably down 90% compared to 50 years ago. Back in the day HS varsity boxing teams were very common.
LSU had a really good college team.

The sheer number of competitive boxers resulted in very high quality stuff among the top 3 or 4 in each weight class.

Wlad hasn't been in an exciting fight since he got knocked out by Sanders and Brewster. Well, maybe the first Sam Peter fight. He's just developed this style that's absolutely unwatchable but hard to beat.

FWIW I don't think boxing is boring overall. But the heavyweights are awful. The Klitchko's are boring and the other guys just aren't very good. Unfortunately to get the casual fan back in you need an exciting heavyweight division.

did they change the rules or format of boxing and not tell me?

BOXING, inherently, has not become boring. nothing has changed to make it all of a sudden a boring sport. people's interests and tastes have changed so many more people nowadays PERCEIVE it as boring.

please don't knock boxing as a sport just because the majority of people these days enjoy less-sophisticated entertainment.

I gotta slightly disagree with you

Yes, people's tastes have changed and with all the knockouts in mma people expect boxing to follow suit and be equally exciting....ultimately dashing their expectations.

But, boxing has become more and more boring throughout the years. Not only are the fans not seeing the match-ups they want to see, but the fights themselves have become more boring it seems. When's the last time a major title fight was exciting? Or ended in a knockout? Seems like all the big fights are between old, washed-up fighters ending in boring draws.

Yeah your "average joe" probably think it's boring. And that's most likely what makes up the bulk of MMA fans. But sports fans don't think it's boring. They do think there is a lack of talent in the HW division. But there are so many other fights out there, even the fight last friday on Friday Night Fights was a great fight. Hopkins v Pascal, Alexander v Mattysee, Ortiz v Berto, Maidana v Morales, Solis v Gamboa. All of those fights were exciting, top 10 matchups. IMO the sport hasn't changed at all, only the fans.

thanks for proving my point. sidewalk boxing fans only care about the huge mega-fight, the knockouts, etc. they could care less about the large number of under the radar boxing matches between two really good fighters who know what they're doing.

kind of like how everyone is a horse-racing fan during the Kentucky Derby or if there's a triple crown contender that year, and the rest of the time "it's boring." no, you just are too lazy, too stupid or too caught up in the SPECTACLE that you can't enjoy the SPORT.

the HW division has become super boring post-lennox

you need to be huge (for reach), have a good jab, know how to defend and hug, and you can do well

it's defensive/safe style, and it develops in most sports.

mayweather has a similar style, but he uses speed instead of size to play defense

defense, aesthetically, is boring

there is a reason baseball got "back" with the juiced HR era, the NBA has changed its rules on perimeter defense, and the NFL has changed it's rules on pass defense. more offense = more exciting to the average joe

the casual fan has typically always cared about the spectacle/big fights, and that was slanted towards the bigger classes

as the bigger classes have developed a boring style, people say the quality is down, and don't watch

the sports, esp as you get bigger, has changed

Look Ro I've watched boxing since I ve been a little boy with my grandpa on his illegal cable box.....

I've followed it through and it has progressed to a chess match of points.......Nobody is going for it all anymore......

I still watch almost every major bout on HBO but almost every damn fight goes to the judges now.......

Don't call me an avg joe cause my opinion is different than yours........I just think Boxing is regressing to a slapfest of jabs and defense.
