How was Rodman able to get so many rebounds?

Aside from the obvious toughness, quickness, and length - the x factor had to be anticipation. What does the MSB think?

sounds like you pretty much nailed it

i would have to say the toughness, quickness and length.

Is Rodman the lowest scoring NBA player in the HOF?

There's a lot of guys with these attributes, though, that will never be the rebounder that Rodman was.

Throw in that he was scared to death of Jordan.

he concentrated on rebounding, more than any other aspect of his game (hard to find any other players like that today).....everyone wants to score. He also has a big booty (no homo), solid base, was able to box out well, was tough, etc. Most importantly, he could jump repetitively at an incredible rate. Dude would tip the ball to himself several times on certain occasions before finally grabbing the rebound.

Other players were afraid of having too much physical contact with him, and for good reason.

Rebounding instinct. Knowing where the ball was going to be before it left the rim.

Would you want to be near him?

He really concentrated on it and didn't need to/care about scoring. I know he went to a small school but he still averaged over 25ppg in a 3 year college career.

Mental. Rodman considered every rebound to be his and contested it to the end. Same with Charles Oakley. Best 6'6" rebounder I've ever seen. Well, other than Wes Unseld.

Rodman also had an amazing second jump. his second jump was just as fast and as high as his first.

he hustled his butt off and made getting the ball his #1 priority. instead of just watching the ball after a shot while it was heading towards the rim, he would be getting himself in position for a rebound. rebounding is not that hard if you actually work for it and he out-worked everybody.

Alot of it is knowledge of your team, their ability and anticipation of the rebound... if your not looking to score, you use all of your energy attempting see what angle the ball is coming off of. this is somewhat of a paraphrase of kevin love but he can score.

He worked his arse off more than any other player to get rebounds.

Rodman did it in a completely different way than Love, outside of effort.

Word.... I remember Rodman flying into the lane getting rebounds sometimes. He was pretty entertaining.

i'd say hustle more than anticipation, but both were important
if you are hard-nosed and try really hard, you can get a lot of rebounds. look at kevin love
yes, you need anticipation to put yourself in position, but rebounding is mostly effort and positioning

Don't remember specifically where I read it cuz it was years back but I read he use to study video tape of all his teammates misses. He watched so much tape that he knew when a certain player shot from a certain spot on the floor he knew where the rebound would go. So if Pippen was shooting from the top of the key and the majority of his misses went left off of the rim, as soon as Pippen went to shoot that shot Rodman would go to that area of the court. He played the percentages. You combine that knowledge with his athletic ability and drive and you have a rebounding machine
