They give them out quite frequently on the water here in Louisiana so I've always wondered.

Yea, the actual stand up surf boards are expensive as hell. $1400 without the paddle.
The one pictured last is something a bit different though.

If you're strapped for cash (like me) take your time and surf craigslist. searchtempest.com allows you to search in a radius around your zip code. You can find a great deal on a used boat.

How do you practice getting in and out of the kayak and maneuvering around in it? Trial and error, or practice in a pool or something?

i was just about to create a thread asking for some advice on this subject as well.
i'm looking to buy myself a fishing kayak but i live in Orlando & I'll be fishing the beaches & mangrove lagoons all around the Atlantic side & FL Gulf Coast.
haven't fully decided if i want to go the paddle board route be/c i'd like the option to sit & relax/nap...ha! but i've seen some interesting seating options on paddleboards too.
any additional reviews/tips/advice would be greatly appreciated.

+1
I've been thinking about a bass buggy or something like that for a while now but a kayak may actually be a better way to go. I haven't looked into them at all yet though.

Hit up the Backpacker Demos at the BR beach, they will let you take some out.
Here is a few they offer...
They have one that you can hook up a small motor to it...I liked it.

kayak fishing is definitely a good hobby and economical way to go fishing
i agree with what was said before about the pros and cons and that you want to get one rigged for fishing
IMO pelican kayaks suck, cheapily made and not enough fishing accessories
I'd go with the brands mentioned before like wilderness, hobie, ocean kayak, etc.
Buy your first one used
i wouldn't worry too much about flipping all the time or how hard it is to do this or that, just learn what all you need to bring out safety-wise like a whistle, life jacket, gps, water, sun screen and definitely bug spray
only times i've flipped is because i was kayaking back inshore from shark fishing and the waves were between 2-4ft and i let the breaker catch my tail and flip me... make sure you tie down all your equipment while doing this and/or have leashes for your rods, paddles, tackle box
i don't see the great benefit to a paddle board or why people say it could be so much more comfortable than a kayak, i bought a nice padded seat and can fish 8 hours on a kayak and just have my arms tired.. i do see the benefit as you can stand up and sight fish but you can buy more stable kayaks that can allow you to do that.
if you want one you can stand up in that is stable, lots of storage, and you can go all day in with out being completely dead by the end of a trip then buy a hobie with mirage drive( but you will pay for it)

Any type of fishing requiring distance paddling, requires a long narrow boat. Otherwise you will kill yourself getting there and back. The paddleboard is a neat concept, but not great when around waves and wakes. Any of the Hobie Peddleboats are good for long hauls, as are the Manta Rays and Tarpons, 14' at least. Peddleboats will run you $1800 to $2500, the MR14 or Tarpon 14 around $1000. I'd buy used to make sure you like it, then move up in a couple of years. Lots of good used kayaks in Fla area.

If you're buying the kayak for fishing, I would definitely get a sit on top rather than a sit in. You can set up your gear, coolers, etc. with much more freedom. I have a sit in and it's fun when the waters get fast if I'm just paddling, but it's harder to fish out of because of all the gear and moving around.

What's a good site for used kayaks?
Posted on 3/24/11 at 2:54 pm to PapaPogey
louisiana sportsman or paddleswap.com for used kayaks. paddleswap searches cragslists and other online listings for you.
Posted on 3/24/11 at 3:35 pm to tigers win2
I got my first one off e-bay. Craigslist works well too. The two lousiana kayak fishing clubs have classifieds, so go to www.bckfc.org and www.lafayettekayakfishing.com and you may find one in La.

I know what you mean, but they are great around waves. I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy a board more than a boat.

I have a 2010 wilderness systems ride 135 with rudder I'll sell for $800.
