The Godfather: Appollonia or Kay?

I've got to go with Appollonia. I think that Michael's real downfall started when she got killed. When he lost the "Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Wednesday" girl, he realized that he couldn't protect his family, which was his driving motivation. He became even colder. Going back to the US and marrying Kay was not a good match. Appollonia would have gotten the whole "Mafia Wife" thing and wouldn't have asked Michael about his business. Kay was really naïve at first, but once she clued in, she aborts his son and tears up the family.
So which one?

Yeah, I guess you're right. It's a no-brainer. I was just thinking about how Apollonia's death was such a turning point for Michael. It was bigger than his father's shooting or assassinating the police capitan, in my opinion. How he went from Apollonia to Kay, I'll never know.

I go from thinking Keaton can be sexy to ugly, never hot. In reality she is more than a bit plain Jane, although as I said, I still find her sexy sometimes.

Good observation. I was thinking about this watching The Godfather yesterday. You see the transformation visually, from suntanned, smiling Michael running around the Sicilian countryside, to the Michael who approaches Kay a year later with his hair slicked back, pale skin and old-fashioned suit and bowler hat like the old men from his father's world.
Completely cold.

Film and social critics have put forth countless theories and analyses about the various meanings and lessons of The Godfather over the years. In the end, I think we all have to agree that the great tragedy of the entire saga was Appolonia wanting to learn how to drive. fricking women drivers. Every goddamned time.

I seem to remember her getting quite a bitch-slappin for that little indiscretion.
I'd go with Appollonia too. She would have rocked his world by night and stayed out of his business by day

Appollonia actually understood him and he could be himself with her. She accepted him for what he was, didn't try to make him shift gears or change his world.
I think where he really changes is when he shoots the cop. No one can protect Vito, Sonny is out of control, Tom doesn't have the juice or clout to protect any of them, and no one has a clue how to stop them. Michael decides to change in order to protect them all. I think that is where the change really starts and after he kills the cop, he is no longer the same man.
