The OP's scenario is the very REASON the BCS > NFL Playoffs.
At least we KNOW Rogers and Roethlisberger are getting paid.

i would say they were the champions

Maybe not. I don't think there's any disputing that the Patriots were the best team in 2007. But the Giants were the champions, which I guess is the title that matters.

BCS pretty much nails it every year.
I don't want to, but I agree with this.

More like reason why nfl playoffs are a fail for determining best team
But never fail in determining an inarguable champion.

Who cares about the popularity contest? Prove it on the field under duress. That's the champion (and de facto best team)

But that same team also beat that opponent earlier in the season which means 2-1 record. Bad example IMO

Did you watch the Falcons and Pats this weekend? Still think either of them deserves the title of "best team?"
Why are you selectively choosing one game to judge the falcons' season, and not the previous 16 games they played in the regular season?

Because they lost when it mattered?

tautological argument
"it matters" because its the playoff system
you can't say the playoffs are when it matters, because when it matters is the playoffs

quote:Yep. It insured the Pats got homefield, which as you say, apparently didn't mean much for them.
the NFL playoffs, where a team beats the living dogshit out of another team in the regular season not too long ago and its meaningless

In just about every major competition worldwide, I can. Well, except major college football. Why is the BCS better at establishing the "best" again?

it uses 12-13 games in its sample to judge teams instead of 3-4. how is that not better?

Why is the December 6 game between the Pats and Jets more determinative of your opinion of who's the "better" team between these two, than today's game or the earlier Jets victory?

Because it uses subjectivity in its formula. Like Ice Skating.
Posted on 1/16/11 at 9:49 pm to Y.A. Tittle
neither on their own is determinative
Team A
14-2, 5-1 in the AFC East, 8-0 at home, 6-2 on the road, 518 points for, 313 points against (205 net)
vs
Team B
11-5, 4-2 in the AFC East, 5-3 at home, 6-2 on the road, 367 points for, 304 points against (63 net)

the end-all, be-all determinative stat is wins/losses, which is objective

The more and more NFL and college football seasons I watch, the more and more I think a 4-team playoff is the absolute best way to determine a champion.
