[quote]we've underperformed historically due to not being able to get out of our own way, either due to political interference, lack of resources applied, or just bad coaching decisions...Alex, I'll take #3 for $1000...

Aside from the past 20 years, florida was no where even close to being elite. You cand just say 1 decade is not enough and anything over 2 decades is too much. This Decade, LSU is THE most elite team in this frickin conference. If you want to really look historically. LSU- 44 bowl appearances Florida- 37 bowl appearances
and Alabama-57...There is only one truly, historically elite team in this conference.

Hey genius, tell me the story following 2002 because I am pretty sure LSU beat Alabama's arse five years in a row after that.

Hey genius, even the Yankees fall on hard times now and again. Bama is back at the top of the pyramid.

Let me tell you how you define elite team. When LSU finally beat Bama in 2000 in Tiger Stadium for the first time since 1969, our fans rushed the field. That Bama team was 3-6. We rushed the field. That is sad and pathetic. But we did it because Bama was and still is an elite program.

what about pre-SECCG? Florida didn't the the SEC title until freaking 1991. LSU won the damn SEC Championship several times prior to Florida winning 1. do you understand the word "never"?

everything about LSU is elite. Except their coach

the recruits
the talent
the facilities
the conference
the gameday atmopshere

we have 2 national titles in the last 10 years. I dont see how u can not say we arent an elite SEC team. We are an ELITE national program. That alone makes us elite in our own conference

But have we ever been an elite SEC team? No.

Please name a more dominate, elite football program that existed over the 5-year span between 2003-2007 in the entire nation, much less one that existed in the SEC during that span. Don't tell me we have never been an elite SEC team.

So we agree that Bama is elite.

I don't care if you think Florida is elite, but if Florida isn't elite based on 20 years, then LSU sure as hell isn't based just on one decade. A decade that ended dominated by Florida and Bama.

The problem many LSU fans have is that they think we should be an elite SEC team but can't accept that even under Nicky Saban we never have been an elite team. We've been good, even great, but never elite. I don't know that we ever will be.

2 national championships, 4 BCS bowl total, 4 SEC west titles, 10 bowl berths, 4 top 5 finishes in 10 years and we arent elite?

You homers keep saying "we should be this" or "we could be that" and while I might agree that we could be, we never have been. We've never stayed at that level for more than a year or two.

I think your premise is all wrong here.

Historically, i think you have an argument, but to contextualize your argument for where we are today, your argument doesn't hold water.

we've been as elite from 2003-2007 as any team in the country.

further, what's gotten LSU fans so upset is that things have shifted.

Historically, we haven't had the best facilities.
Today, our facilities rival almost any other team in the country.

Historically, we haven't paid top dollar for coaching.
Today, we have one of the top paid head coaches in college football.

Historically, we are a 7 or 8-win team.
Today, over the last decade we've been at or near the top of the SEC in football in wins, SEC crowns, Nat'l Titles, etc. about the only thing we haven't done is have a player win the heisman.

Historically, you might have an argument.
In the context of the last 10 years, your argument fails. that's what's frustrating the fan base.

Since 2001, there have been few, if any programs in the country as elite as LSU. Every game is on TV. We are in the hunt for every recruit. We have top notch facilities. We are highly ranked every year. Truth is, the national media can't wait for our staff to figure it out. LSU is loaded with talent, and they know it.

In the vacuum of the Ron Zook / Mike Shula era, sure I guess.

Kinda like my Houston Rockets were DOMINATING those two years after Jordan's first retirement.

I just said that to you. You cant say the past 20 years if you wont acknowledge the past 10 years. The past 20 years, florida has been elite and the past 10 years, LSU has been the most elite team in the conference. If you want to say who are the elite teams in the sec right now, there are 3, if you want to say all time, there is one...well really 2, but one isnt florida

5 years ago, would you consider Bama "elite"??

prob not. If you say "yes". you are prob lying.

how can they gain elite status in 5 years after 1 national title, yet LSU cant after 2 in 7 year peroiod?

Damn.

Maybe our problem isn't that we have Les Miles as our coach.

Maybe our problem is that Bama has Saban instead of Mike Shula and Florida has Meyer instead of Ron Zook.

You want to go back to 2003-2007, let's start by putting back in place subpar coaches at Bama and Florida.

What part of 5 years out of 50 doesn't make you elite don't you understand? And you can't even count 2004 because that was a pretty subpar year.
So we're really talking about 4 seasons for LSU out of the last 50.
