This is meant to be educational ...

Shrimp carry a bacteria called vibrio vulnificus (found in salt water)

Warning this link contains graphic images of what this flesh eating bacteria can do
(must carry antibacterial solution on a boat)

really only during hot summer months is this a worry. The bacteria dies off as the water cools back down in the fall.

When I was still in pre-med I volunteered in a local E.R. and a guy came in with vibrio in his leg. Had stuck himself with a hook while fishing in leeville. His leg from thigh to ankle was turning black and the skin was about to split. Oozing everywhere. One of the grossest things I have seen. Had to disinfect the whole room after

From what I understand most people with a healthy immune system will be fine. Most of us have probably come in contact with this stuff before. If you do happen to get it though...... I can't think of much worse things.

Is there, if any, a way to stop it

i have heard on many occasions, it takes amputation?

I've heard shrimpers carry bleach onboard with them so that when they get stuck they immerse the spot in bleach as soon as they can to kill any Vibrio if it's there. Scary to think what this stuff can do.

I've been stuck with shrimp about a 1,000 times. Never saw anything like that before.

I know a guy from Sulphur, got finned by a hardhead with the vibrio virus on it. That virus and his general health lead to his death. I believe he may have been diabetic..and that lowers the immune system..

I got stuck in the leg many years ago. Within a few hours I could not bend my knee. Got 2 antibiotic shots before the doc decided to put me on an IV. Took about a month before I could bend my knee more than about 20 degs.

A few of the charters that I've been on carried bleach for this reason.

Not really. Its in the water. Not on the shrimp. Anytime you get a cut from a hook, fin, or anything esle, you are exposed to it.

This! Its a saltwater disease. A cut by anything in saltwater can expose you. Hooks, fins, oysters, rocks, etc.

Saw a nasty nasty article in TX Saltwater Fishing Magazine where the author got hit by a sting ray while wade fishing and then got vibreo on top of it.....Gruesome!!!

Vibrio is most common in low salinities as well. that's why if you have saline contact solution it will help to kill it. Oysters from mariculture offshore do not carry vibrio, regardless of time of year.

Point: Get your arse offshore.

I work in surgery and have seen a few people with some really bad infections related to vibrio.

Most of the people were peeling shrimp and got poked. Did not think much of it at first. Then the finger, then the hand, then the arm start getting infected.

Could easily see ligaments and tendons.
