Hey team, long time thread lurker, first time poster. I'm 6'1", 267, a righteous fat fricker. I'm looking to lose 2 pounds a week for the next year (that sounds more manageable than losing 100 pounds). I figured I may chime in here occasionally for support and ask questions

270/267/170

First question: I read that cutting down on carbs is a good way to lose weight. Oatmeal has a lot of carbs, but I hear it's healthy. A nice clementine orange has a lot of carbs, but again, healthy. Am I shooting myself in the foot by eating a half a cup of oatmeal at 28 carbs in the morning with a 20 carb glass of juice, then an orange a few hours later? seems like a lot of carbs.

Second question: from a carbs perspective for weight loss, what is the difference between eating that orange mid morning and eating a comparable (carb wise) pop-tart?

It's a lot of carbs if your goal is to do something like Keto where the goal is typically to stay under 50 carbs per day (or as low as under 20 depending on the person). Otherwise, if you're just trying to reduce your carb intake some then it's probably not a big deal.

As for the second question...the pop tart would be a simple sugar/carb. compared to a complex sugar/carb like the orange is. for more details on that...here's a link to a decent write-up on the difference between the two types of carbs.

Simple vs Complex carbs

either way...welcome to the thread and good luck with your goals!

I'm not targeting any specific diet type, such as Keto. in the last 12 months I put on about 100 pounds by being a fat disgusting slob, eating out for lunch every day at trashy fast food places, etc.

I'm stealing a theme from Daniel Tosh. This is the year of subtle changes. Nothing immediate and drastic that I won't be able to stick to for a lifetime.

First change was to cut out the fast food every day entirely and substitute with leftovers from the previous night or two. This will also save me about $200 per month. Second change was gradually reduce the portion size of dinner meals. This has been going pretty well so far, and the wife has been supportive.

Next month I will focus on gradually changing those dinners to something a little more lean and fresh. dropping the mid morning pop-tart for the orange, etc.

Thanks for the link on carbs, that will help understand some of the things I need to substitute.

what kind of juice? What kind of oatmeal?

most juice is loaded with sugar. A lot of instant oatmeal has sugar compared to steel cut oats.

Even when juiced freshly, fruits lose a lot of their nutrients

as for fruits, 1 orange a day isnt going to kill you. But too much fruit can stall weight loss. Orange vs poptart= pop tart has zero nutritional value. Poptart has nearly 2x and many grams of sugar.

you're going to need a plan of some sort.

At the least you're going to want to count your calories.

280 calories, 49g carbs, 19g sugar. That seems like a whole lot.

The juice I know will be sugar loaded, something like Minute Maid peach/strawberry in a carton. Would skim milk be a healthier substitute for that form a healthy, sustainable weight loss perspective?

So if that with a cup of skim milk is no good for a healthy, sustainable weight loss diet, can someone advise an "instant" breakfast similar to that which fits that mold?

Daily target is somewhere around 1750 calories. I'm pretty sure I've been previously eating that just in fast food every day for the last year so I should be able to lose the weight just by making these subtle changes after cutting that out. I'm trying to keep this simple to help me stick with it. When I drop these 100 pounds, then I can focus on strict detailed dieting.

Right now I'm just trying to nudge myself into a position where I'm not going to die in 20 years from obesity and diabetic related problems.

damn dude that is terrible. id throw it out now. You're not going to get very far eating that.

Eggs can make for a pretty quick breakfast. say 3 eggs, 2 slices of bacon, and half an avocado.

gonna be loaded with sugar too, mate. Juices are badddddd.

skim milk would be better. Water even better. They say that drinking 16oz of water when you wake up can fire your metabolism and curb your appetite, among other things.

or look into coffee without loading with sugar.

Here is a quick breakfast I make sometimes when I make breakfast. Whisk four eggs in a bowl with a 1/4 cup shredded cheese and a couple tablespoons salsa. Nuke for 3 minutes stirring half way. Roll into two burritos using Ole Extreme Wellness low carb tortillas. Smear a little sour cream in the tortilla if you like. Takes like five minutes and is low in calories, high and fiber and protein and will feel you up much more than oatmeal.

Drink nothing but water, and a lot of it. Ditch all of the juices and sugar loaded stuff. Drink a powerade only for the electrolytes and calories if you are running / lifting. But water will flush your system from the go and is essential for shedding. Buy 1 liter bottles and drink 2 before lunch and two after, more than that if you are exercising.

There are a million and one diets but the one that works is cutting portions and cutting the crap. Good luck!

It can be. Do you track your eating? Do you know how many carbs/day you're eating currently?

Typical Americans don't need a ton of carbs since most of us are lazy turds. ~150g/day max, IMO, if you're not working out. But what's even more important is the source of those carbs. That oatmeal you posted is not much better than junk food.

Do yourself a favor and buy a big tub of steel cut oats. They're extremely cheap, and you can cook a huge batch on the weekends to have for breakfast every day. You can put a little stevia, cinnamon, and a little fruit and have a decent breakfast. You can add a scoop of protein powder to oatmeal to make it more balanced.

Again, the source of your carbs is very important. A clementine may have sugar, but it's also going to be backed with great nutrients for your body. The best bang-for-your-buck fruits are most berries. They're typically the lowest in sugar and the highest in nutritional content. However, apples and oranges won't kill you, either.

STAY AWAY FROM CEREAL. Even "healthy" cereals are loaded with extra sugar and hidden sugar (dextrose) to make them taste okay, because they'd probably taste like cardboard without it.

To your body's processing of said sugar.. not much. The difference is the nutritional profile of an orange vs a pop-tart. There's little to no nutritional value in that pop-tart, but that orange has essential vitamins and other wonderful things.

Hope this helps

That doesn't sound bad. What's the nutritional breakdown of that?

I would have to look it up but it comes to about 500 calories and 40 grams of protein.

That's not bad. I could cut that in half to fit my goals. 2 eggs in one burrito.
