i dont know why you people continue to argue over this.
We have arguably the best WRs in the coutry, and one of the best O lines, yet our passing game is ranked 115th out of 120, same as last year.
Thats all you need to know right?
Fact: our passing attack is desperately inadequate due to a certain player at a certain position, and our coordinator shares the blame.
EDIT: Fixed it. better?

hard to argue with any of that.

Pretty good summary (edited edition).

I would like to see some WR middle screens. Our offense will be just a little more explosive with Randle and Sheppard catching those short passes with a head of steam.

I'm not really sure if this is correct because I haven't rewatched the games, but do we ever try to run our backs over or outside the tackle to get them into space? It seems every running play is a dive straight into the back of a lineman.

But in order to run the offense that crowton wants he needs a decision maker and dual threat guy. Crowton has had to create an offense that is enigmatic at best.
IMO, Crowton is receiving way too much of the blame for the O-woes. No doubt, some will mention the "Crowtonic-trend" (first year success followed by decline) but until someone normalizes the main factors at play it's difficult to blame all of the O-woes on him. For example, in '08 GC was forced to use Hatch/JL (and eventually JJ). Apart from the OM game we scored enough points to win/be competitive in every game.
IMO, we are no longer seeing GC in full control of play-calling. Indeed, he may "call" the plays but the menu from which Les allows him to choose is sorely constrained.
So if JJ is going to be the QB and we're going to mostly ignore our talent at receiver, etc I have few problems with the play-calling.

You're telling it like it is! All of us would really love to see the offense click with lots of successful down field passing & many more plays for Shep--doesn't look like the play-calling is any better than last season & JJ shows little improvement so far.

This is a dead issue until JJ/GC costs LSU a game. Until that happens, nothing will change and may not change even when it does cost LSU a game. One can only hope that a change is made sooner than in 08 before the losses begin to pile up.

This brief summary is pretty much all that needs to be said. Re-watching the game confirmed what I thought-primary receiver covered, pitty pat go the feet and it turns into a run-as someone else said, at least he is running forward more than backwards, for those that are trying desperately to find some improvement over last year. Therefore, we are destined to have high completion percentage, low passing yardage, and a high number of running attempts by the QB on our stat sheet. More and more it becomes apparent that our limitations at QB are a much greater blame (or are driving) playcalling.

Is Miles in charge or not? I keep reading all this crap about "we would like to get Ford in the game". You are in charge, play him or don't play him, but quit making up crap about why he isn't playing.
He says certian sets and situations are better for him. I think any offensive play should be the right situation and any set. If you are a good running back, it shouldn't matter. Our offense isn't that good.

Our secret playbook that lies in wait for Bama
1st & 10 -- Ridley up the middle for 1 yard
Crowton
2nd & 9 -- JJ option to short side for no gain
3rd & 9 -- JJ pass to first available receiver 3 yards from line of scrimmage

Although our qbs are not top notch, I am still way more comfortable with JJ starting. He said, " Its hard to throw for 300 yds when you only pass for 16 times." Shep also mentioned the problems don't always fall on Jordan. Two td passes were dropped against moo state.
Now the problem is the coaches say they will open up the passing game when the game calls for it. But I still find it hard to believe. We need to stop bashing our players and put blame on the coaches. Jordan had a bad game, then followed it up with a very good game where he should have ended 13/16 and 2 tds.
Drew brees had a bad game to his standards yet the saints still found a way to win. Good teams find a way to win and I believe this is a very good team we have.

Uhhhh . . . You say that "Jefferson only throws short passes" but then you say he has 4 completions over 20 yards. So, really, Jefferson doesn't only throw short passes. And of course, my point was that if you ignore Jefferson's passes over 20 yards, you're gonna think he only throws passes shorter than 20 yards. It's kind of axiomatic
4 out of 33 completions have went for over 20 yards, that's 12%. if you are telling me that's a good average with the downfield receiving threats we have, then you are just missing what i'm saying. (which i'm sure is possible, because you only see STATS)
quote:
In the drives he did have, Jefferson picked up crucial first downs on several of those drives.
Moreover, on several of the drives that Jefferson had, he could not have picked up more than 1 first down before LSU crossed the goal line
he still only lead 2 drives in which he picked up more than 1 first down. he had 2 drives which started inside the opponents 30 yard line 1) Ridley broke for a TD 2) they gained 6 yards and kicked a FG. that's the only 2 you can count that if they would have picked up more than 1 first down than they would have scored. on the others he was in plus field position picks up what you call "a cruical 1st down" then the drive stalls and they have to kick FGs.
quote:
Oh, we're going to play this game. I ask which plays, and you say go watch the tape. Hey, you say he did it, why don't you tell me which plays he did it on.
i have no interest in rewatching that putrid game to chart the throws he's made. we'll just agree to disagree here.

Translation: Yeah, truck man screwed up, again, but he won't admit it
actually not really. because although Ole Miss has lost to Vandy and Jacksonville State. they are playing with young talent and will get better as the season goes along. by the time they play LSU, i expect them to be more mature and playing better football and Ole miss/LSU games are always close.

My take on all this...
Disclaimer: I am not at any level an "expert" on analyzing these issues. I am at the very best a novice!
I think this offense is being over coached or managed during the game. I saw so many substitutions during the game it was ridiculous. Ridley would have a nice run or two and then he would disappear.
Many of the comments that say the coaches are playing not to lose is probably correct.
Bottom line is I simply do not get the logic and/or strategy of the play calling this season. Its not balanced, we don't go with the "hot hand" and the post game commentary never jives with the reality of the game. Maybe its all a disinformation campaign!
I would also add there have been some quotes from the players that they do not understand some of the in game coaching decisions...

According to all the experts on here we have an inaccurate QB that has trouble throwing down the field accurately... or short accurately for that matter.
Why is everyone clambering for LSU to go a bit farther down field more often when we have a qb that has proven for a year and a half that he isn't capable of doing that?
