Just got it on Netflix. I was young when it came out so I don't remember how well/not well it was received. My impression is that it came out with a lot of fanfare but fell short of expectations. Anyways, what were you guy's thoughts? It has a great cast (Damon, Law, Blanchett, Paltrow, Minghella, Phillip Seymore Hoffman)

This is the only movie I have ever walked out of the theater on. But that's just my opinion.

Yep, it was painful to watch on a lot of levels.

I thought it was really good and it's one of my g/f's favorite films. Any film that gives me a serious mental response gets props from me, even though this film mostly gets an antsy/uncomfortable one.

This is one of the worst movies I've seen in my life.

wow. didn't realize there was so much hate for this movie out there. i thought it was a great movie, honestly. one of Matt Damon's best, imo.

Haven't seen it in 10 years. I just remember it being real fricked up.

Isn't he supposed to be a fig in this movie?

I thought it was good too.
Definitely a fricked up movie, with Damon as this gay stalker kind of dude, but all kinds of social drama tight social group. Also had elements of Catch Me if You Can with the highly intelligent fraud doing a good job of pretending to be someone he's not.
Great casting, and the scenery was beautiful.
But I can see why people don't find it enjoyable because there are several uncomfortable moments and the plot just doesn't work out the way an objective viewer might hope. Been a while since I've seen it, but I seem to recall that the bad guy essentially gets away because the prim and proper social strictures of the upper class are averse to unpleasantness. It's a film with interesting characters but no real hero and a protagonist with whom it is difficult to sympathize.
Think it's based on an old pulp fiction novel, but I don't feel like taking the time to google that right now.

America's Most Wanted did a t.v. movie on a guy that was very similar to Ripley.
Loved TTMR, and been wanting to watch Ripley's Game.

The two best Ripley adaptations are both foreign:
Talented Mr. Ripley
And one of my favorite 70s movies, Ripley's Game

For the record, I really enjoyed it. Not the greatest movie ever, but definitely worth viewing. I thought the acting was outstanding. Jude Law, Cate Blanchett, PSH, Damon, Paltrow...everyone in it was outstanding.
I'll give it a 7.8. I like the creepy thrillers that actually have good acting and a decent plot. That said, it could've been much better with some work on the screenplay.
