Not really 2 beers that are comparable imho, I like both for different reason, and wouldnt ever turn either one of them down if someone offered me one.
Both are definitely in my go to categories.

Andygator isn't a barleywine.
Yeah, I was thinking it was closer to a poor mans Belgian Triple? No?

When Abita first produced it they called it a barleywine themselves.
ONLY very recently they have reclassified it as a dopplebock.
They call it a Helles Dopplebock now but it is a fact that when first released they called it a Barleywine.
ETA doing a little more research it appears that they didnt start calling it a Dopplebock until they started selling it in bottles.
Looks like they completely redid Andygator? Used to be 11% when it was called a barleywine now its 8%. I guess this had something to do with distribution. I havent tried it since it was termed a barleywine on draft though.

That's interesting.....
And I agree that Andygator is way overrated.

Looks like there was a change around 2008.
Not sure what happened. Seems half of the reviews on Andygator are as a barleywine at 10% alc and the rest are as a dopplebock at 8% with many people making comments that they would have liked to try it when it was a barleywine.

Something like that. The current version is a 'helles doppelbock' which just means light doppelbock. It's definitely not 11% abv, and I have my doubts that it was ever really truly a barleywine, as why would they name it Andygator? The 'ator' ending on a beer name is synonymous with German doppelbocks. My guess is it used to be a darker stronger doppelbock that was incorrectly referred to as a barleywine and it stuck.
I guess you'd have to talk to the Abita people to really figure that out.
ETA: Just went back to the old BeerAdvocate reviews and as early as 2004 there was contention as to whether it was a doppelbock, regular bock, or barleywine.

When Andygator first came it it was in fact refered to by ABITA on their website as a Barley Wine.
What they produced pre-2008 was indeed a barleywine as well. You could only get it on draft and it was listed at 10-11.5% alc back then.
Something obviously changed when they decided to bottle it. I honestly dont believe Gator has anything to due with German dopplebocks in one single iota because they didnt call it a dopplebock until they bottled it years after they first released it.

quote:No it wasn't. It might have been called a barleywine, but it wasn't one. Based on everything I can find, it was described as either a doppelbock or barleywine, but it was more of a malt liquor.

But yes, something definitely changed when they decided to bottle it. What they do now is definitely more of a doppelbock, but it's not really even a true doppelbock.

It is 100% fact that ABITA called this beer a Barleywine.
Hell just look at some older reviews on this beer from people that had it at the brewpub.

If you read through the reviews this beer was listed as retired at one point in time. Its my guess this is when they came up with a new recipe for it. IF you look at the really early reviews all listed it at 10-11% alc.
Looks like the time of change would be more around 2004-2005 not 2008.
If anything it looks like most people agree reviewing it that its neither barleywine or dopplebock its closer to a Colt 45.
So maybe it should have kept the name "continental malt liquor" instead.

This beer is listed on BA as a dopple, above the bar at the Abita Brewpub as a barleywine, and in the Abita Brewpub's menu as a "continental malt liquor". So really what is this? Served in a small chalice. The color is light golden, head is very small. The aroma is sweet and beery. Pretty much a richer version of the smell in a standard malt liquor. The taste is most reminiscent of a malt liquor, I really can't see this being classified as a barley wine or a dopplebock. A flavorful light malt taste is backed by subtle hops. A mild taste of alcohol is in the finish. Basically, I'd consider this a craft beer version of malt liquor. I'd drink this again, but Abita has plenty of beers I'd rather have.

quote:No doubt. I'm not saying they didn't CALL it a barleywine, just that it wasn't really a barleywine in a traditional sense.
It is 100% fact that ABITA called this beer a Barleywine.
Like you just found out, even back then it was very mixed as to what the style really was, and it's not like beer styles have strict conventions to follow.

Exactly... it was probably some sort of hybrid malt liquor. That's what I remember it as from back in the day.

Does it taste different now? I havent had a glass since like 2003.

This. Just because they say it doesn't make it so. Andygator never qualified as a barleywine, not that this should surprise anyone. Hell, they insist on calling Jockamo an IPA after all... Those guys at Abita are confused.

I thought that they had to be careful about the ABV in bottles, with a beer/fortified wine classification. This is also why they have to bottle it in the big bottles as I understand. I thought the tap version was still 11%?
