Holy crap. Goodman dropped a ton since this show was filmed. Check out a recent pick. Maybe now he won't get winded typing or talking.

When I saw Anthony Bourdain speak at the Mahalia Jackson theater in N.O. in January, I saw Goodman walking to his car with a lady friend. He looked just as big as he does as Creighton Burnett...I'm gonna go out on a limb, and say they were filming the show at that time. Good to see he's lost some weight over the last few months.

It was also the second time I've ever seen Goodman in person. Saw him several years ago, and talked to him for just a minute...seemed like a nice guy.

He did...I saw him at a restaurant about a month ago, and I thought the TV added about 50 pounds to him. He needed it though.

Thank you. I knew I saw him walk away. The guy that gave him the cigerette looked back at him and didn't see him so he thought he jumped. But they showed Goodman walk away.

He definitely did not walk away, I just rewatched it. He does turn to look at that one guy walk away, but that's it.

no way he walks away. They set up his suicide the whole show for the suspense to next week and wouldn't show him walking away.

if he'd have jumped, there would have been a pretty epic splash. there was none.

he is probably drunk in a gutter somewhere

Sorry, your observational skills fail you. He did not walk away. I watched the show after I read in the other thread that he committed suicide.

They did not show him walk away. We were definitely meant to think he killed himself, although I do not think he did that.

I think they made it too obvious that he was going to commit suicide and will try to surprise everyone next week when he isn't dead.

No doubt, especially with him teaching about the Awakening at Tulane. The main character in that book drowns herself.

Beat me to it.

Goodman's character is based on Ashley Morris. Morris was a huge man that had notarity for going on tirades in his blogs. He died of a heart attack a few years ago. Apparently, he was a huge Wire fan and good friends with Simon

I'm not sure why they would set it up for everyone to think it is suicide and then it not be.

Suicide hints:

- Tells his daughter she is pretty before she leaves that morning.

- Teaching The Awakening in class and discussing the final suicide scene. He seems to have a moment of inspiration in the discussion and lets the class go early.

- He has a fitting last meal at a restaurant: Shrimp Po-Boy, Gumbo, and Abita Amber.

- Gives $20 to Annie on the street for violin playing.

- The whole ferry scene: he bums a cigarette, the way he disappears off the boat, the view of his car at the end.

Why the hell would they go thru all those indicators to have him not commit suicide???

In my opinion, they already teased his suicide in Episode 8: When the wife walked through multiple rooms looking for him and then paused as she opened the door to find him on the porch... I thought he was going to be found dead then.

The depression issue/increase of the suicide rate during the months after Katrina had to be addressed in Season 1 - as there is a great article stating how suicides leveled off a year after the storm (after peaking the first few months). It takes a main character like his to drive the point home to people from outside New Orleans. If it was a minor character, people would have shrugged "oh well..." - just when they found the body under the boat earlier. We didn't know that character, so we were indifferent.

This.

I hinted weeks ago that something was up with Goodman's character and got slammed for not issuing a "spoiler alert".

It should have been obvious to everyone watching that the guy was suffering from serious depression.

SPOILER ALERT

No one saw him "walk away from the rail". I have reason to believe that, at one point, the script definitely called for Goodman to commit suicide. If they changed it toward the end of filming, or if he appears next season in flashbacks, that's another matter.

I pray to god this does not happen.

I hope either IMDB is wrong or Simon just messed with us.

It would seem that if he wanted to show the suicide rate, he should have picked one of the other characters to off themselves since Creighton really didn't lose anything.

I know Survivor's guilt is a real form of depression, but it is harder for the average tv viewer to understand.
