Nebraska no, think its a done deal going to the Big 11
Rivals says:
Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Colorado
eta: also has a A&M official saying that they have spoken with the SEC about moving

Assuming the Big 10 takes Missouri and Nebraska, that leaves Texas, Texas A&M, Colorado, Kansas, and Iowa State as the remaining AAU institutions in the Big 12.
The PAC 10 may not hold as firmly to the AAU requirement that the Big 10 does, but academic ranking is still going to be something of a factor. Oklahoma State, Kansas State, and Texas Tech bring nothing to the table in those terms.
Here are the PAC 10 USN&WR rankings and AAU status:
ASU 121 N
UA 102 Y
OSU n/a N
UO 115 Y
WSU 106 N
UW 42 Y
SU 4 Y
UCB 21 Y
UCLA 24 Y
USC 26 Y
Here are the Big 12 USN&WR rankings and AAU status:
BU 80 N
TT n/a N
UT 47 Y
TA&M 61 Y
OSU n/a N
UO 102 N
KSU n/a N
UK 96 Y
UN 96 Y
UM 102 Y
UC 77 Y
ISU 88 Y
In terms of what else is still out there academically: Utah (126), BYU (71), Colorado State (128), Rice (17, AAU), TCU (110), SMU (68), and Tulsa (88).

culturally? exactly how do you mean?

Texas and Oklahoma know that they can bring in a bigger paycheck if they wait and join either the SEC or Big Ten. The Pac-10 really wants Colorado because it would they would get the Denver market.

austin yes, their fans? not so much

So what happens to schools like Utah and BYU, who geographically fit better in the PAC 10 then some of the schools mentioned? Why is everyone forgetting about these two schools that have great fan bases and tradition? Four 16 supreconferences is on the way people.....and i LOVE it!!! Kudos to the Big Ten for starting this snowball of events that is going to happen.

If the PAC 10 does expand to 16, I'd like to see them try and keep the 2 schools in a given state (sans California) system they have, for rivalry game purposes. I do like that dynamic, even when the teams may not be that great in some years.
Utah and BYU do fit into that mold, as do Texas and Texas A&M. Colorado apparently doesn't want Colorado State with them from what I've read online, though.

A&M has to be on the phone with the SEC right now. They'd far rather be in the SEC than the Pac-10.

rivals says A&M has already had conversations with the SEC

For the SEC, I'd probably rather move East than West, unless they can get Texas (and A&M).
If they were to go for A&M and not have UT or OU, they'd probably need a second team from Texas. Do you go with a Houston or a Rice in that scenario?

Maybe a A&M - Okie move, it was mentioned in the article as speculation that Okie might prefer the SEC
But frankly a A&M, Rice (a west match for Vandy) FSU and Miami might make a whole lot of sense

its kind of funny the way lots of people look at geography as almost the #1 issue. The #1 issue is revenue. The state of Utah has about half the population of the DFW metroplex. That does not get TV execs to excited. BYU from what I understand won't play sports on Sunday, whcih makes them a huge pain in the arse for sports other than football.

Pac-10 West
Washington
Washington State
Oregon
Oregon State
California
Stanford
USC
UCLA
Pac-10 East
Arizona
Arizona State
Texas
Texas Tech
Texas A&M
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
Colorado
That would be a great conference in every sport.

Baylor, Houston, or Tech.
I'd rather go to Texas because the SEC looks East while LSU's traditional rivals are in the West. We've played almost as many games against old SWC teams than teams currently in the SEC East. LSU could use some Texas teams in the SEC.

the more I think about it, I really like the idea of Rice....Houston market.....Waco and Lubbock bring nothing media wise and while I admit Rice isn't some huge name in Houston, I think if Arky, Bama, LSU are coming to town the coverage would follow

kinda, the university is more cultural elites or whatever but ultimately they are beholden to the fans
I see what you are saying in the academic setting sense since texas has the idea they are a outstanding school (which is funny to some i think) and better than the SEC
as far as teh culture of the fans they are texans IMO, arrogant and parochial but more like southerners than west coast liberals

Texas doesn't want into the SEC. Not because they fear the competition, it's just about the money. Any new deal Texas strikes will have to increase their revenue, and I don't believe they think they'll get that from the SEC.
