I have heard a lot of people talking about boycotting BP and companies they are affiliated with. What effect, if any, will this have on BP?
It seems a wiser move would to put the pressure on BP,Federal Government, responsible party(fill in the blank) to pay for the clean-up, fix their mistake, take steps prevent this from happening again.
I do not want to see this happen to anyone anywhere. The big picture is not clear to many of us so I will read more , listen to those in the know and try and use what mental faculties I have left.

The boycotters can't see past the ends of their noses.

Who do you think owns BP? It is not the British government or the few BP executives that are being interviewed on television. The owners of BP are the millions of shareholders who own stock in BP. If you have a 401K that is invested in mutual funds you probably own a piece of BP. I imagine that the majority of BP shares are owned by Americans. A boycott of BP only hurts yourself.

That is stupid. I guess the terd's will just put farts in their gas tank. BP has an active upstream and downstream side unlike CITGO. Some people in america are dumber than a box of hammers

You can't reason with some people. Their way of thinking is that BP makes gasoline and ships it to their gas stations and boycotting those stations will hurt them. Like I said before, I work for a major oil company and I know all the products we make. Hell, at just this facility, we make gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, coke, wax, rubber, etc. Plus, we don't just supply gas stations branded under our name. We supply our competitors as well. So, if someone boycotted us by not going to our gas stations, they probably wouldn't even scratch the surface.

The one thing that i am seeing come out of this "Boycott movement" is people young and the more seasoned demographic are getting involved in how this industry works. My kids are seeing what an unhealthy thirst for more energy does on a global scale. I've witnessed some mind boggling feats of engineering and some of the most asinine decision making when it comes to safety measures.
I will also add that I have been reminded by my children to not forget the 11 hard working people that lost their lives. We (I) tend to lose sight of what's really important because we (I) had my summer vacation plans ruined.

They will do what CITGO did and change the signs on the gas stations to something else.
There were 3 BP stations on Hwy 98 in Hattiesburg, 2 are now Texaco.

And they still may or may not be selling a product that was handled upstream by BP.

I agree, I'm sure the gas didn't change at all. Just a sign they may have experienced some loss in sales and are doing a facelift to distant themselves from BP's bad press.

I don't care if it hurts anyone or not or whether it is really PB gas, if there is a BP sign at the pumps, that gas will not go in my truck.

Like someone stated earlier, it's nothing more than a "feel good" thing.

With the Moratorium I think there will be a lot of boycotts going on. Like food, electricity, mortgages, car payments, etc.
Posted on 6/9/10 at 10:27 am to JonTheTigerFan
A boycott of their filling stations does little or nothing to them...I just avoid filling up there as a matter of principle.

I work for a major oil and gas company as well. Well the folks who will boycott not buy makeup, and other household items?

Boycott BP, they won't even notice.
Boycott BP (gas stations), ruin a business in YOUR community that provides employment and tax revenue.
Idiots fail to comprehend this concept. But then again emotional reaction is better than logic
