First five seasons of the X-Files are the greatest in TV history. Last few seasons of the show were a big disappointment, though. Still number one for me at the moment. Definitely a show that was ahead of its time.
This, this, this, this and this. People forget how great early X-files was.

Current: House, Psych, Smallville
All Time: MASH, X Files, Smallville
The Smallville pick has a lot to do with the fact the setting started in highschool when I was in highschool. I also just like superman.

Seinfeld.
A distant second would be Frazier.

The Simpsons at its peak in the mid-late 90s was unmatched in its combination of humor and heart.

Edited my response. I thought about it last night, and I was listing sitcoms mostly...if I go with TV series, then my answer changes to Planet Earth, with Band of Brothers a close second.
