Russia has locked in an automatic qualifying spot to the playoff rounds.
Now it's down to Finland, USA, Czech Republic, Sweden, and Canada for the last three auto-qualifying spots.
If Sweden or Finland win outright without going into overtime in their game tonight, the US can clinch an auto-qualifying spot just by losing to Canada 5-1.

This is not the case. If Sweden wins, then they get the automatic bye and Finland would have the tie breaker over the U.S. via goal differential. If Finland wins, then the U.S. is in business (barring a serious blowout loss to Canada).

Thanks. It may have been already posted but I just had a minute to come inside and post, as I have been building a deck in the back yard all day.
Just watched Al Michaels recounting the 1980 USA hockey team and remembered when and why I first got into the sport. Amazing time and event.
GO USA!

The US will be the #1 seed in the playoffs if Sweden beats Finland.
If Finland wins, Finland will be the #1 seed. The US will be #2.
And if Canada beats Germany next, they play Russia in the quarterfinals.

Yep, now it's time to hope for a Finland loss or OT. It's remarkable that after the prelims, only 2 out of 12 teams will be undefeated and that the U.S. is one of them. This is a stacked tournament. Unfortunately, there won't be any easy games, but it's nice to have that extra day of rest.

Switzerland-Belarus going to a shootout after a scoreless OT (Good for US-the winner skated an extra half-period!) Online or on CNBC.
My money is on Belarus now--more talented scorers.

So is it better for us to play the Swiss or would it be better to play Belarus?
