No no no. He said he did not want to detract frm the saints. He is nothign but class. He had NOTHING but great things to say about the Saints the presser. He saw Sharper or whoever on his way out and gave him a huge hug and congrats.

He gave his reason why he didn't, didn't wanna get in the way of the spotlight of Brees and the Saints. You can believe it or not, but Manning has always proven to be classy, and was that way with his postgame remarks. Reaching here.

This. I'm far from a Manning apologist but I thought it was classy that he let the Saints have the spotlight. I believe he also said he contacted Brees and explained what happened then congratulated him.

The Herd, First and Ten, etc. are looking for an angle to stir up fan interest, especially now that half of America is going to focus on the next most important sport, which is avoiding the IRS.

This is the NFL, if the players want to take offense fine, but this isn't the fans' concern. This is just an attempt on the part of minor news outlets to get people stirred up.

FWIW I'm not in the "Manning is a classy guy" camp, I just couldn't care less.

same here, and if would have just admitted that at some point i would have respected him more.

he was pissed as all hell, rightfully so.

But, i think his "spotlight" excuse is bullshite, and a nice spin to make himself look gracious.

it's the excuse that irks me, not the absence of a handshake.

Because Manning has no history of being class or gracious?

ESPN is minor?

the fact that has been discussed by so many talking heads means it's not a total non-issue....ESPECIALLY for someone who has painted as the best guy in the universe.

So basically...you spent the whole day listening to sports radio trying to find something to be pissed off? Jesus dude. Lighten up. It was a great game.

Good Sportsmanship is helping a guy up after you just leveled him, or patting a guy on the back after a nice hustle even though he's playing for the other team out of genuine respect. Obligatory gestures are demeaning to the spirit of the game.

And for the life of me, I will never understand why people complain about sore losers. What the frick do you expect? "Golly gee I guess if I had to choose I'd ruther of won, but they's good people too." Something along those lines? C'mon.

The most depressing people I've ever been around in sports or in real life were contented losers.

Aside from being one of the classiest guys in the league, he's also one of the most overexposed. Regardless of Peyton's motives, I'm glad the spotlight was left to Drew, his son, and his team.

Being a good sportsman is playing fair, respecting the game and giving credit after to an opponent. Manning did all those things Sunday. In his postgame press conference he said of his quick exit: "I certainly know how it was three years ago when we won. There's not much consolation for the guys who didn't win. There's the stage being set up and the celebration. It's time for the Saints to celebrate. It's their field."

That's probably a tad disingenuous, but no more than it would have been if Peyton had walked over to congratulate Drew Brees.

For the record, Peyton did call Brees later in the night. Said the Saints quarterback: "Peyton's a class guy." If the man who was supposedly snubbed thinks so, that's enough for me.

Me neither. Pretty much the whole Colts team shook hands with the Saints. Why couldn't Manning?

BTW the stage bullshite is garbage

Agree fully. Its stupid. You have the 'haves' and the 'have-nots' on the team right after they all pulled together to win it all. Only a few select players get up on that little stage. Its pure stupidity.

Why the hell was Reggie Bush up there? There were 20 other guys that should have been up there before him. Was it in his contract that he got to be on the stage with the owner and coach if they won? geez.

And I think its weak for fans to complain because someone doesn't shake hands after the game. WHY DO YOU CARE? You won the Superbowl. I wouldn't care if my car got stolen if my team had just won the super bowl

Manning is still better than Brees. I don't see why he HAS to meet and shake hands with Brees.

Just stupid.

matters? who know, but he is taking a little heat....deservedly.

All sportsmanship is basically just token acts, yet it is still expected behavior.

I agree with a lot of this, but token acts matter. It's just showing respect to your opponent. We may trivialize sportsmanship, but I think it does matter. I wasn't really on LeBron for not shaking hands since I don't care about the NBA, but I would be all over an NHL player who refused to shake.

So, bitch move. He deserves to be ripped.

Manning showed poor sportsmanship. Since when is sportsmanship only acceptable in "little league"?

These guys are setting the example for youngsters. It's simple, after the game, you walk over and shake hands then go about your business. It's merely a sign of respect, and humbling yourself even in defeat.

Manning not doing so was a sign of disrespect, period. His giving props in the press conference helped to undo some of it.

Since when did sportsmanship have to be shown all the damn time. If he didn't feel like going up to Brees, he didn't have to....plain and simple.

No, he didn't have to. He has every right to choose to be a douchebag. But freedom of choice is not freedom of conseuqence. When you act like a douchebag, expect to get called a douchebag.

It's kinda like Character, you either got it or not. You don't just turn it on and off.

I agree with you on this. This is America, and there is no law stating you have to shake hands. But the public is free to form an opinion on whether he showed sportsmanship or not.
