Billy's speed was close to 4.4/5 range in the 40, it is hard to tell.

I would probably think that in 1955 the world record for 100 yards was above 9.4 and in football they did not keep 40 yard times.

Whether u Believe it or not, I had season tickets during that time & Cannon was yrs. ahead of his time. In this day & time he would be in the hunt for the Hies. Trophy race every yr!

Cannon was plenty fast, but I seriously doubt those numbers to be accurate. Cannon was faster than most people on the field even when he was playing tight end for The Raiders.

FWIW:

Cannon won the 1958 SEC Championship Meet 100 yard dash with a time of 9.9 seconds (Cannon's track teammate, Ralph Fabian, won that event the next year with a time of 10.0 seconds).

Wonder how Cannon stacked up in H.S against best 100 yd guys? Joe Delaney comes to mind. Coffey,D.Milan,Rod"Rocket"Richardson. Prolly hard stats to find!

I can almost guarantee you that he did neither.

As I recall, he held both the 100 yard dash record in high school at 9.7 seconds and also held the shot record. Also, he ran a 9.3 or 9.4 at LSU (appparently not in the SEC meet). 3.9 40 = impossible. All times were hand held.

I literally cannot believe this thread has gone this long.

100 yards is a bit shorter than 100 meters.

I remember as a kid reading the paper where Billy Cannon ran the 100 dash in 9.6 flat. That's it. Neaux 9.4. He did throw the shot an unbelievable 50 something feet and won both events at LSU

Cannon could outrun most of us with Trindon Holliday on his back.
