Anyone else feel like they threw a dart blindfolded and just so happen to hit Jackpot??? Traditionally the Saints have made a shite ton of awful management decisions. I just feel like they must have been "due" or something. lol

No he was a big time up and coming assistant and most thought it was a very good hire at the time.

Loomis did his homework and apparently could see talent when it was there.

Same with Mickey Loomis.

The saints had major displine issues and that was something they wanted to address. Plus he was suppose to be the head coach in waiting for the Cowgirls but SP bolted for the new orleans gig. His wife was initially against it.

eh not really. He had some impressive names endorsing him for the job.
I think the better question is how big of a fricking mess are the raiders that sean decided here post-Katrina was a better situation?

Interestingly enough, SP may have been the one guy that could have had some success in Oakland.

well looking back, 2006 was sort of a lightning in a bottle year but by now i expected payton to be winning lots of games, he was a dallas assistant for a while and since im always force fed so much cowboys crap here in texas i'd been hearing about him for a couple of years. he was also highly recommended by john fox and a couple other coaches around the league.

wasn't gb down to sean p and McCarthy and went with McCarthy?

Sean Payton had a really, really, reeeeeally impressive pedigree.
Working under Parcells is one thing, but he also spent time working with Jon Gruden and Ray Rhodes in Philly..really helped him develop his offense into what it is today.

no it wasnt a shot in the dark. he was up and coming... john fox recomneded him as well as john gruden. from what ive heard he told loomis, look i dont put up with bullshite, i want to run a professional team like a professional business. no jerkoffs or screwups. hence we got rid of whats his name with the recliner in the locker room and stallworth. sean p didnt want any bullshite guys who frick off

No.
I believe it was Southlake Tiger on this board who was his neighbor and laid it all out before they hired him.
Southlake Tiger, if he's still around hit a home run on analyzing this guy and his ability as a coach and the fact that Parcells was holding him and his talent back.

according to some people on this board last year, sp shouldve been stripped of his playcalling duties

When he was chosen was I happy? Yes. Thrilled? No. Didn't really know him. Just knew he was one of the new young guys. The fact that he was exposed to Parcells was a positive. I was just glad they got a good offensive guy. Until Belichek came along defensive minded head coaches had not done well.
That being said they just got lucky with both. But a little luck is ALWAYS involved in making a champion. The Brees choice scared me. Loved the guy and what he did in San Diego, but his injury looked nasty and was on his throwing shoulder. Also, at the time Culpepper was not yet terrible or washed up. It really was a crapshoot. Saban had first crack and passed to get Culpepper. Lucky us. But look at any great team or championship team and shite like this has happened. Alot of plain luck is involved.

I think I remember reading that initially, Payton wasn't on Loomis' radar. Loomis got some sort of assistant coach interview highlight reel and was impressed by the answers Payton gave to the sample questions.

Its amazing, having a bad defense last year, and everyone called our offense "gimmicky". Having a decent defense this year and its a great offense, not "gimmicky"
