"And the problem with the (Southeastern Conference) today is that it's better than it was 10 years ago. Not to take anything away from Saban, but when Nick did it, it was easier to do than when Les did it. All the schools in the league have expectations that are so high so that you've got schools paying coaches $3 and $4 million, and they all have better facilities."

its Skip's shitty job at being an AD that got us in this mess.

Bertman supporting his hire. Shocking.
8-5 and 9-4 seasons are not worthy of $3.95 mil.

Does Skip even know that Saban is back in the SEC, and that he won the SEC and NC in 2009? Wow, I always knew Skip was a shitty AD, but I didn't realize how just plain stupid he is.

Bertman brought LSU into the modern era with the TAF ticket plans and massive facilities upgrades. Without those, we'd be like Mississippi State now.

You know what they say about Opinions.....
I can't see how you have that one though... Skip's only bad hire IMHO was Smoke --- and really, at the time (following a LEGEND) it made sense -- if it worked and Smoke had the "magic" LSU wins, if not.... he got his shot and it didn't work out.
Our baseball program didn't fall of the face of the earth during those years - we just didn't win the NC. Then skip got a new coach and we're right back in the very thick of it and have won another NC within 3 years.
The athletic programs self support and we've built incredible facilities --- I say Skip did pretty darn good.... but again ... that's MY opinion ... as is your in the other direction.

quote:Nonsense. Skip was a great Baseball HC at LSU. He was not a football man. He does not know the game of FB, inside out. His tenure as AD at LSU proves the point. And even though he understands baseball, his long reluctance to make the change he needed to make in his successor (Laval) exposes a blind spot that perhaps is resurfacing in his similar defense of his hire at FBHC.
we'd be like Mississippi State now.

he ran off Henry, went cheap on a football coach, totally botched naming his successor because he was too fricking greedy to give up camp money, and nearly botched the hiring of this baseball coach by having 4 guys turn him down before lucking out with Mainieri. Sure the guy could coach but his hiring practices were questionable at best.
Russian is just a baseball homer who can't take it out of his mouth long enough to admit anything negative associated with the program. Everyone knows Skip was maybe the best head coach of all time in baseball but his job as an AD left A LOT to be desired.

No, I'm an LSU fan who does not try to criticize every aspect of the athletic program like you do. Does it make you feel superior to do that?
1) He didn't run off Henry. LSU fans don't support track and field and there was no way the program could match what TAM offered Henry. TAM does support T & F, btw. I suppose you had season tickets to LSU Track? Or, maybe you never went to a single track meet, more likely... Even with all the NC's in track, the program lost money every year Henry was here. It still loses money.
2) He didn't "go cheap" on hiring Miles. Other than Saban, Miles was the highest paid LSU head football coach in history. Still is, now even including Saban.
3) Bull shite on your description of hiring Mainieri. You lost all credibility with that BS. Jim Wells was the only other coach considered.
4) His only "questionable hiring practice" was Laval....and he had made an early-on commitment to Laval, which he kept. He felt he owed it to Laval due to the lean early years when he and Laval built the program. And Skip made it right by eventually firing his friend. Not an easy thing to do, but he did it.
5) You're an idiot.

If you think Skip is bad AD, I have no idea what you think a good one looks like. The '00s were the Golden Age of LSU Athletics and easily the program's most successful decade in terms of both winning and revenue. They upgraded the facilities while also making money hand over fist. Also, just about every sport was competitive for national titles. I'm not sure what your standards are, but I don't see how Skip can be labelled as anything but an overwheleming success, particularly since he took over a program that was still smarting from NCAA non-compliance with Title IX in the most spectacular way (really, the 1990s LSU case is a textbook example on what NOT to do).

quote:I'm pretty sure Nick just did it again this year. Nick winning the SEC and NCG in his 3rd year at Bama kinda kills this argument from Skip don't ya think? Why is it easier for Nick to do it again now yet harder for Les?
when Nick did it, it was easier to do than when Les did it.

he got him for what? 1.5 million? If he had gone up in what was paid to Saban (2 mill at the time) he could have gotten a coach with more credibility behind his name.

cool. I knew you were too immature to have a real conversation with.

quote:Only on this board. Not in the real world. Just because someone on here writes a post with an idea it doesn't mean that is what really happens. Bianco even publicly said he was staying at Ole Miss before the search even started. He was never considered...at all!!!! (Thank goodness! Just look at his record there in the post season.) Mainieri was Skip's first choice after Wells said he wasn't leaving Alabama. You need to stop confusing message board chatter with reality.

This is not a conversation. It's a message board.
So, you can call teenage girls whores on here, but if someone points out how stupid your posts are, that's immature??? Ok, I understand now.
You have such an inferiority complex, you have to criticize successful people in order to feel better about yourself. You need counseling....

I didn't say making less... I thought we should have shelled out MORE money and gotten someone. Hell, Del Rio wanted the job but Skip was too damn impatient.

Is that what they told you at your little Coaches Committee circle jerk?
