Avatar will be the big winner, like it or not. Hopefully it doesn't get Best Picture, though. It doesn't deserve that.

Don't like the switch to 10 movies being nominated for Best Picture. The list should still be just 5. It feels more elite that way.

This may have been my favorite year of animated films ever. That list of best animated features is tremendous.

Tom Hardy really should have been nominated for his performance in "Bronson" IMO. He was stellar.

That should be a landslide.

Finally the Academy doesn't give the middle finger to animation with Up being nominated for BP.

Also I'm very surprised The Blind Side got nominated for Best Picture.

I don't think Avatar will win Best Picture. Has there ever been a Best Picture winner that wasn't nominated for best screenplay (either categories)?

Yeah, I can't wrap my head around "The Blind Side". Just seems like another cheesy sports movie in the tradition of Remember The Titans.

I'm really surprised that "Where the Wild Things Are" got left off of the Original Score list.

I hope The White Ribbon wins best foreign language film. I've grown to love how fricked up Michael Haneke's movies are. It won at Cannes last year and is just now being released in Amurka.

If "Up" doesn't win "Best Animated", then I call "bullshite".

Its nominated for BP. Its pretty much 100% going to win. Its probably a more sure thing than Christoph Waltz winning.

Coens with two noms, including their usual Screenplay nomination. God, what a weak crop of movies.

Let the Stop Avatar campaign begin.

Might be the worst Best Picture group of all-time even after expanding the field to 10. And even if you just took 5, they would still be underwhelming. I mean, I like District 9, The Hurt Locker, Up in the Air and Inglorius Bastards, but the only one that really deserves the nod is The Hurt Locker, and in good years, it wouldn't get one.

Up, by far, is the Best Picture on that list.

Avatar runs away with it though, too many special interest movies on that list.

An Education was really good. Not good enough to push it to the top of the pile, but still underrated bc of its limited release.

Screenplay penned by Nick Hornby, fwiw.

Glad to see "Up" got nominated for Best Picture. I'm lucky I have kids that I can use as an excuse to see animated films. If you're a guy though, swallow your pride and see this one. The Ellie/Carl life montage is genius.

while I agree this year is quite weak, I think you underrated Basterds and overrate Hurt Locker. But Avatar as a serious contender? That sums up this year perfectly.

I'm talking more in terms of "Best Picture" noms, not best films of the years, two different things.

I think Basterds, while good, would only be "Best Picture quality" to a select group of people (the same could be said about most of the movies on that list).

On the other hand, The Hurt Locker, has strong direction, a capable and clear hero, modern issues at the forefront, and a satisfying ending. It doesn't do anything particularly well (except for maybe direction), but is just a well-rounded film that appeals to a lot of people.

On the other hand, "Up in the Air," is clearly the Little Miss Sunshine/Juno indie pick (and I though it was a very good movie), "Precious" is the edgy/obscure pick with the great performances, Avatar is the blockbuster pick, etc.
