If Time Travel Actually Existed...

...which film or television series do you think comes closest to getting the physics and mechanics of time travel "right"? Why?
My vote goes to Primer. It will take some time for me to write up why it gets my vote, but the attention to detail is outstanding and at first glance the physics of the temporal experience, etc, are sound.

Obviously, Primer. Which is why I love that movie, how it so concerned with the sheer mechanics of how it works. A brilliantly layered movie.

Stargate did a pretty good job explaining how it happened to them.

LOST/Terminator. I really don't think you could change the past if you go, you merely fulfill the past. The Terminators created their own worst enemy by trying to go to the past and kill him, but instead led to his creation. When Faraday tries to change the past, he comes to realize that he had been set up his whole life for this and that his mother always killed him.

No other time travel movie was as clever and inventive. And all without ever mentioning the words "time travel" during the movie.
You need a chart just to keep track of what's going on.

This.

Okay so I have a question about BTTF.
Biff travels back in #2 and gives the sports book to young Biff. So at that exact point, time changes. How does he then go back to the same future and die or something?
And BTW, The TIme Machine.

Yeah, BTTF's mechanics break down pretty quickly. Then again, its not really meant to be taken all that seriously.
LOST does as good a job as it can, given its scope. There's that whole "timeless artifact" thing with the compass that knocks it down a little, however.

Speaking of Biff, he does the exact same thing I would do if I had a time machine: go 50 years in the future and gets a sports almanac. Also I would be sure to find out what companies get big so I could invest in the stock market properly.

Nerd alert: I drew a picture/graph on a napkin immediately after watching the film to make sure I had it right.

Agreed. They could have easily gotten around this and just say that Richard lost it, but has one "almost identical" to the one Locke gave him.

There's a pretty helpful chart available on Wikipedia. I studied it for a long while after I saw the movie.

Oh no, as in stepped into the lobby of the Angelika immediately after the film was over, grabbed a napkin from the popcorn counter and started feverishly drawing. No time for wikipedia.
And I had it right on the first shot.

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

I want to give a shout out to Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.
For a film that is in no way meant to be taken seriously, it does a really, really solid job handling time travel.
ETA: Damn, fitz! Same time!

I went to HS with David Sullivan from Primer....And FWIW, I loved the movie and spent hours on end reviewing these timelines...
Primer Timelines
For those that haven't seen it, please follow these steps:
quote:
LINKThe 10 steps must be done within a week. This way, everything stays fresh in your head. Steps must be performed in this order:
1. Watch the movie: if you get really confused - great, that's part of it.
2. Watch the movie again: still confused? Good. You did step 2 so you can better understand step 3.
3. Look at this timeline chart: LINK
Read over it twice.
4. Watch the movie with Director Commentary: there are little bits of info mentioned here that you may not have picked up in the film.
5. Watch the movie with Cast and Crew Commentary: there are little bits of info mentioned here that you may not have picked up in the film.
6. Watch the movie again: starting to see things a little differently? Good, young Padawan....onto step 7.
7. Look at the timeline chart above. Read over it it two or three times. Things are falling into place aren't they?
8. Watch the movie again. You may ask yourself how Shane Carruth ever planned this movie. Good luck finding an answer. I think even he didn't realize the number of layers of time he was putting together.
9. Look at the timeline chart above. You've got it now, don't you?
10. Watch the movie one last time. Congratulations, you've done it! Oh, if your ear is bleeding now, don't worry, it's normal.
Now go get some sleep.
