Parents who stress the football rather than the free education and life after football opportunities are idiotic. As much as I love LSU, if my son had offers from Vandy, Stanford, etc.... there'd be no long recruiting process. Palo Alto or Nashville here we come.

This is a debate that can be mis-construed or twisted very easily, but I think college baseball is the only "major" collegiate sport where education comes into play with major recruits. Hence the success of Stanford, Vandy, Rice, Pepperdine, UC-"insert name", etc.

No I wouldn't choose his college, but I'm instilling in him the value of his education versus the value of his far-fetched dream. Choosing a Vandy or Stanford over a powerhouse program can ultimately get you where you want to go, if not in athletics, then in life.

With the NFL going everywhere if going pro was a goal and the player really is that "talented" he can go to Vandy or Stanford. If the kid wants to play for a championship or play with the most talented kids they choose another school.

I'd do the same thing, because if you are good enough to make it in the NFL, you can make it just as easily from one of these schools as you could from a big time school (perhaps more easily if you are a big fish in a small pond). It happens all the time.

Yeah, no one from LSU has ever succeeded in life after college.

And further more, a general studies degree with a 2.6 from Vandy isn't going to wow anyone.

Still better than a degree from LSU, ceteris paribus. But agreed, it would still not be very impressive.

I would either go to UVA, Stanford, or Duke given the opportunity to be an athlete.

Pepperdine is falling off because it's just too expensive to go there. The UC schools (outside of Cal and UCLA) are nothing special academically, but it's dirt cheap to go there, that's why the Big West is becoming such a baseball power, kids that were going to USC and the West Coast Conf schools are now going to Irvine, Fullerton, Poly, etc because the private schools cost too much compared to the other schools in Cali. Fullerton always got kids anyway, but the other Big West schools are improving by leaps and bounds.

I highly doubt Vandy has general studies, but I would agree that getting a 2.3 at a school like Duke or Vandy isn't going to open doors to Wall Street. However, the biggest frick-ups from Duke football have jobs in sales at the Durham Nordstrom's. That is much better than what LSU or Auburn can probably say.

This is another useless post that doesn't deserve space on this board. What recruit does this have to do with?

It at least deals tangentially with recruiting. Much better than the 15th "Zomg!!! We have the worst class ever!!" thread.

It's the chicken and the egg syndrome. Does the degree give you high earning potential, or is the high caliber of those admitted what allows the earning?

After you get your first job, it's all about how smart you are. The only thing from college that is still going to help you is the networking you did while you were there. If you are a worthless idiot with an ivy league education, no one is going to want you.

I do agree that the education is superior, but it's not a golden ticket to success.

FTR, I agree with the original post and I would have gone to Stanford, UVA or Vanderbilt if I had the choice, but that's because I would actually be going for the education and playing the sport to finance it. If I had made a 20 on my ACT and had a 2.8 GPA coming out of high school, I would have avoided those schools like the plague.

There's more to picking a school than the name on the cover. There are numerous studies that compare post grad earnings to school cost. Check some out you would probably be surprised at some of the names on the list. Besides, depending upon your major, the department you are a part of is more important than the school.

This isn't a racial slur, but we have to consider the i.q. some of these guys have...or their parents, for that matter
