Teachers losing jobs and coaches getting raises??????????

The people of Louisiana deserve better. Why didn't Les give part of his salary to pay for Chavis' raise? What's more important?

300-400 instructors getting let go and Brick gets a raise? Worst year in a long time by our DL and he gets a raise. WOW

LSU has one of the few athletic departments that actually makes money and gives millions to academics every year.
If you don't know what the hell you're talking about, maybe you STFU.

The football program pays for itself unlike instructors. Different situation.

No one is "getting let go" as of now. It is a contingency plan "IF" the budget cuts are required. The law requires that you give instructors 12 month notice of any impending personnel action. So, to cover the bases, they are sending letters saying that they cannot give complete guarantee that they will have jobs if the cuts are required as currently projected. Athletics gave $6 million to academics last year and are self supporting and not a part of the budget. How about questioning why they are turning Tower Drive into an ice skating rink for the "Winter Wonderland" event to be held on campus? How about saving that money for other more pertinent needs.

Professors bring in millions of dollars in research grants. LSU is a great school on the rise academically and its professors will be brining in millions more in the coming years. The potential for dollars earned in the research and academic world blow football money out of the water at big time academic institutions. Research expenditures nation wide been on the rise during the economic downturn. Four universities this year earned over a billion dollars in research for the first time in history.
Too see LSU take a step back like this is a big deal in the short term. As the state gets its budget back things should turn around. But you need professors to bring in grant money.

Most people know the football program is self-sustaining but, it doesn't change the fact that politically it looks bad that you have employee's who preside over mediocrity getting raises and those possibly doing very well at their jobs potentially losing their income. I know you say free market here but, the truth is if miles and his gang were ceo's they wouldn't be getting these bonuses for sucking ball sack at their jobs. Oh wait....

True. But it just looks bad to do it at this time.

Although you clearly are misinformed and more than likely a complete idiot......LSU's athletic program does not accept public funds and is completely self sufficient. The coaches raises in salaries has absolutely no impact on these teachers.

LSU Athletics (Football) =/= academic institution
Totally seperate entities. The football program provides some funding back to the university. If it were the other way round, you'd have a point.......but, you don't.

does lsu ever layoff people like a regular businesses would do or do they tend to just keep people around forever?
Posted on 1/21/10 at 9:41 am to Raymanz
you did read the post where no public money goes to the football operations.

while we all have some level of disappointment, they finished the regular season 9-3 with a trip to the best non-BCS, Years Day bowl. As far as business plans go, that ain't far off.

I have no sympathy for anyone in academia. And this isn't geeks vs jocks. There are way too many professors and instructors pushing an agenda these days. They are overpaid as it is.

That and they fleece the students with book deals........

sorry but people aren't burning up credit cards to get the same tweed jacket that the philosophy teacher is wearing

...The univesity and state need to look at what LSU's athletic department and take notes.
LSU's athletic department does not take one single dollar of tax money from the state. It is funded totally with private dollars. The TAF is a private entity.
The athletic department and TAF are funded by ticket sales and surcharges. These are very large. They are in fact..."tax increases" because LSU fans are paying for better facilities and coaches. That is our choice.
Millions of dollars of profit are donated annually from the athletic department to the university. In fact, the athletic deparment donates up to 7 million to the university.
The state and it's Governor do not want to pay for higher education. That's their choice.
Keep being a dumba$$ and screwing with the goose that lays the golden egg...and one day, you ain't gonna have the goose and you can kiss your 7 million dollar egg goodbye.

The Superdome is scheduled to undergo $320 million in new renovations in three phases, due to its contract with the New Orleans Saints. New windows have been added for natural lighting, and an expected face lift will make the roof-facing a solid white hue and the sides of the dome panels a champagne bronze color. The entire outer layer of the stadium, more than 400,000 square feet of aluminum siding, with be replaced with new aluminum panels and insulation, and an innovative barrier system for drainage will be added by 2010. The dome is set to resemble its original facade.
In addition, escalators will be added to the outside of the club rooms. Each suite will have modernized rooms with raised ceilings, leather sofas and flat-screen TVs, as well as glass, brushed aluminum and wood-grain furnishings. A new $600,000 point-of-sale system is also being installed, which will allow fans to purchase concessions with credit cards throughout the stadium for the first time. Once all three phases of the renovation are completed the Superdome will be one of the most up-to-date facilities in the U.S.
Get the Saints to do something first before asking it of LSU.

It was a poor choice of words brought up in the faculty senate discussion.
LSU coaches base salaries are paid by the university because they are teachers. 300,000 of Miles salary is paid by LSU, 400,000 of chavis salary and the list goes on.
I think that was the point being brought up but it was turned into a negative.
LSU athletics is keeping the university afloat right now and its common knowledge.
