Hey lynch mobsters, please consider this scenario....

Before the hail mary, an assistant coach tells Miles the timeout was called, but he was mistaken. We lose 15 or so seconds before we correct the situation.
During that last timeout, everybody gets on the same page. If we get a first but not a TD, we either spike or kick, depending on time left. Kicking team on the ready, if necessary.
Then the hail mary is caught by TT for a first, but an Ole Miss defender steals the ball from TT on the ground. Coach Miles storms toward the ref motioning downward with his arms that TT was down and in possession, in an effort to make sure they don't give the ball to Ole Miss, which would mean game over.
The LSU signal caller sees Miles arm motions at the ref and mistakenly thinks Les is calling for a spike, so he relays that to the players.
Miles turns back around from the refs, sees no kicker on the field, and starts motioning with his leg that we have to kick. But it's already too late to get the field goal unit out. Confused, JJ spikes the ball, but game is over.
Then, just seconds later in the immediate post-game interview, Miles is completely baffled as to why the field goal team wasn't on the field. He has no idea who called the spike or why, therefore has no explanation to offer. He just has to say the obvious - we ran out of time. He is covering for his assistants, who he suspected screwing up, because he had not had any chance yet to find out where the confusion originated.
It was simply an honest mistake that occurred from a strange circumstance - some of his coaches and players mistaked Miles arm motioning at the ref, about TT being down and in possession, when the Ole Miss guy tried to claim an INT. They thought their head coach was calling for a spike, and that call was then sent to the players.
After viewing all the videos several times, that is exactly what I think happened. Even Coach Miles had no way of knowing what had happened, before talking with his coaches and team.
So.... please open your minds, look closely at all the vids, and give Coach Miles a little respect how 'bout, before you jump to conclusions and just string him up, based only on raw emotion.
It was simply a weird circumstance that created an unforced error, and it cost us a chance for a miracle W.
But it was not due to Coach Miles being clueless about the situation within the game.
If the Ole Miss defender had not tried to claim an INT (and end the game), Miles would not have felt he had to point out to the refs that TT had been down and in possession. Miles may have also been hoping for a second or two being put back on the clock, by pointing out that TT had been down as soon as he caught the ball.
Unfortunately, Miles motioning down with his arms to the refs looked a lot like a spike call, and I think it was misinterpreted as such by some LSU coaches and relayed to the players.
Coach Miles is a great man and a great coach. I think next year he will guide us thru a great season and possibly even another run at a BCS title.

I'll accept that scenario, but what I have a real problem with is passing the ball 1st and 10 on the 30 with 2 time outs. It just doesnt make any sense whatsoever.
Also the 2nd fade on the 2pt conversion.

I won't argue about the last play, but letting the clock run to :09 before getting the timeout was official was a complete clusterfrick...I don't care what he thought he "heard". The fact everyone wearing an LSU logo wasn't jumping up and down, calling timeout as soon as Ridley hits the ground is mindboggling.

Took you this long to piece together that rickety link of assumptions, guesses and hopeful thoughts?
The body of Miles' failures in clock management, game management, personnel management and general deer-in-the-headlights sideline performances weighs strongly against your tin can chain of bullshite and hope.
He is not a great coach. He is lucky and has had loads of talent.
People like you willing to give him the benefit of the doubt will drive this program into the ground.

I agree that this is likely what in fact did happen. However, it should NOT have happened. We have got to be better than that. Miniature versions of this confusion crap have plagued us for quite some time, but fortunately haven't been this terrible.
A good coach would have used the TO called to tell the team what the next play would be, provided we get the pass but not the TD.
Bottom line is, this should not have been allowed to happen.

Les is incapable of watching a clock? Which is more inexcusable... that he didn't make sure the clock was stopped, or that he didn't actually call any timeout and lied about it later?

HE IS THE HEAD COACH!!!! He should have had the field goal unit standing beside him with 1 minute left in the game. You are a fricking idiot man! This is all on Miles and nobody else. Grad students, assistant coaches, players none of em. He is absolutely clueless and has been for a while.

ok lets say you're right (which you are not).
How do you defend the defense giving up an 8 minute drive in the 4th that showed no intensity or will win?
How about the "fade pass" call on the 1.5 yard line for the 2 point conversion with Russell Shepard on the sideline?
Or how about wasting the timeouts in the first half just to set up off-tackle draw plays?
Or pass plays being called with a gimp QB when two simple draw plays to the center of the field would set up your very capable kicker to hit a game winner?
Or how about an attempted onside kick when we are up by 8 and our team has the momentum?

Doesn't matter. What upsets me more than that was the play calling when LSU got it down to the 30 and then failing to call time and allowing the clock to run all the way to 9 seconds.

My conclusion is that letting almost 20 seconds run off the clock after the third down play was an inexcusable blunder that CANNOT have a reasonable explanation.

Putting aside for the moment the question of how in the hell any assistant can be "mistaken" about that when all it takes is a look at the fricking game clock to see that it's running, does Miles not have his OWN eyes? Can he not see the fricking clock running like 60,000 fans in the stadium and millions more watching on TV? Why are our team and coaches the only dumbfricks in the whole wide world who don't know the clock is still running? Inexcusable. He should be fired for that frickup alone, but that was only one of MANY similar clock management frickups he's had over the years. The moron simply has no sense of what is going on in a game. He's completely clueless.

You are almost as big a moron as he is.

Good post. Although I'm just as pissed at Miles as the next guy, the "Miles called for a spike" is really irritating me, given that it indeed is FALSE.
I'm mad about the 2 passes on first and second down at the 32. I'm mad about the 2pt conversion repeat play. I'm mad about the timeout not getting called. But I'm very aware, unlike many uninformed LSU fans, that Miles DID NOT call for the spike.
