That hit is the definition of spearing.
No, it's not. You might want to read up on what constitutes "spearing". FWIW, the term was eliminated from the rule book this year.

Redding said the official will be penalized too.

Wow.
Thanks for the perspective, T1.
I would feel a lot better if the league presents this in a press release or otherwise acknowledges the error somehow. Given all the issues this year on officiating, they should do that.
However, asking WAC to clean up the SEC error after the fact still takes a lot of gall.

no reason he should be suspended for the next game. It should have been 15 yards and thats it.

All of you guys who are claiming this is not a penalty are idiots. There is a completely defenseless 6'5" receiver getting hit helmet to helmet by a player who launches his 5'10" frame UP TOWARDS his (the receiver's) head. What don't you understand?? The guy jumped up high in the air and led with his helmet into the head of a defenseless player. This is a malicious hit that the pitiful officials should have called and ejected the player from the game. Yeah, this is football but there is no place for this kind of cheap-hit crap. He could have safely lowered his shoulder and knocked the hell out of the receiver to ensure a "no catch" without any repercussions.

If I am reading this correctly, then the WAC action is the result of intervention by the NCAA and NOT the SEC. Looks like the NCAA talked to the SEC about it as well.
This is even MORE interesting:
absent intervention by the NCAA, does the SEC even acknowledge the error? Does the SEC penalize the offical as the NCAA suggests?
Again, the SEC looks awful, unless the league asked the NCAA to get involved. Even tehn , the SEC does so because it's officals screwed up the call (again.)

Guess that puts to rest the issue of whether it was a shitty hit or not.

Technically, he can't lead with the should pad because THAT is spearing on a defenseless player. You cannot lead with the crown of your helmet. What was he suppose to do, let him catch it and let tech lose by 30+? The kid led with his hands, forearms, then the head collide. He did not lead with his helmet, thus, did not initiate the hit with his helmet causing helmet to helmet contact.

Junky,
As best I can tell, you are one of three people who have viewed the evidence and discerned that this is not an illegal hit to the head.
Others claim to have seen the Virgin Mary in a peanut butter sandwich, so you are not entirely alone.

it is in the rulebook
you have huge lsu homers on here that were in shock thinking "this is tech, they are not allowed to do this to us, should not be allowed to do this to us"
I'm tired, heading to bed

Coach Miles agreed and said so on his show tonight.

SEC official: Clean hit

One had the luxury of replay.
The SEC ref was standing within 10 yards of the play and was looking right at the flagrant hit.
Competent officiating is a luxury the SEC can't afford.

This kinda puts a red flag on the incompetance of the SEC/Bama refs, makes Slive look like the peice of shite-bozo-bamahomer he is.

LaTechisBetter,
Your commish may be spineless, but you have been the primary advocate on these pages of the notion that Boyd made a great, legal hit.
Your credibility was gone from that first post and now is undermined by your own league.
Maybe you should go contemplate ULM...

What it came down to was that Tolliver was considered "defenseless" because both feet were not on the ground yet and he didn't have complete control of the ball. Same hit a half second later would have probably been legal.
ETA: Because the other rule about the hit is that you can't lead with the "crown of your helmet" and Boyd led with his facemask, not his crown.
