That was a black hole for Tiger football. Worst era in my lifetime.

The funny thing for me is that I didn't grow up an LSU fan. I was a transplant. So, when I went to LSU, I had a pretty limited background. As a result, the Hallman years weren't as painful as they could have been. It was still one hell of a party on football weekends and I didn't really know better. Even though '88 was a decent season, it was still wrought with the some ugly losses (think Miami in the torrential downpour). After that, the wheels fell off.

Curses to Brett Favre...

Under 25 Fan here.... and I don't claim to speak for everyone but think about this. We don't remember anything but bad LSU teams.

quote:

(most kids don't start following football seriously until puberty)

my cohort grew up watching our parents and other relatives scream at the TV and complain about the quality of our coaching and the wins. Sure we didn't understand it, but on some level we knew that LSU never was "that" team to be playing in the championship. We couldn't name the starting lineups but we could see that LSU wasn't playing in new years day bowls. The earliest memories we have are of LSU being a mediocre team and where winning seasons are accomplishments. In that time span, short of a 3 season span of progressively worse bowls under Dinardo (other than 1995-1997 we have seen nothing but mediocre lsu teams). What we have also seen is a program reaching its high water mark, a peach bowl, and then playing 2 independence bowls around it in 1995-1997. This would be when we are in middle school, and when our parents may have taken us to an LSU game @ tiger stadium.

Now reconcile this with when we entered college and LSU began winning consistently, we could watch championships and BCS bowl games. There is a part of us that understands, maybe even fears what will happen is the program that we have has hit its high water mark and is on its way down. And we all remember how miserable watching football is when the most you have to look forward to is an indpendence bowl. So if the team look like its struggling, yes the under 25ers will hit the panic button. We have grown up with a mediocre team that suddenly became great when we began to go to games regularly.
Now we see the same pattern repeating, BCS bowl, sugar bowl, peach bowl, and we're hitting all kinds of panic buttons before the LSU team ends up with a .500 season and a game in Shreveport.

Terrible assessment. I'm an LSU student and I defend Miles. I would even be considered a "positiger" according to the rant. There is no age limit for an idiot sir.

I'd probably agree with this. Those that jumped on the bandwagon did so for a reason.

It's like a Florida alum I met about 10 years or so ago. He was a huge Gator football fan, but was also a huge UK basketball fan?!?

You and the other students who defend Miles would make sense according to my theory.

I lived through the Charlie Mac years, and I'm pretty amazed to see the hate for Miles. Dietzel was pretty much canonized after his LSU NC. When we were kids, fans would almost whisper his name in reverence.

Now we can't say Saban's name without spitting and Miles has a love/hate thing going with the fans.

If Miles gets another NC with us, he should leave on a high note.

People who started following LSU football closely at different times have a different perspective. For example, they might understand that what DiNardo accomplished from '95 to '97 was every bit as phenomenal as what Saban accomplished in '01 and '03,

I totally agree with this assessment.

this board is exactly what its name implies
a rant( to speak or write in an angry manner).
there is very little appreciation here for reality and a shallow perspective is the norm
by many posters.

there has been a huge shift in the lsu fan base. many of our current fans remind me of alabama fans after the bear.

we won two national championships in new orleans!! two great teams and coaching staffs
put together an unbelievable run...and i'm grateful that i was able to attend both...
i've attended games since the early 60's ..believe me 3-0 start ,top ten ranking,
beating a ranked team at their place ,top recruiting class...and we have fans leaving at
half time by the thousands..complaining about everything ....we may not win the sec....but
this coach and this team is worthy of our support...our 18 yr old QB will be up and down

lets everybody take a deep breath...back off
...enjoy the fact we are undefeated!!

lsu grandad i think you are correct, although no generalized statement applies to everyone. i have been a fan since the mid sixties & a season ticket holder since the arnsparger years. hallman years were brutal. bringing my kids to games during that era, they could not believe lsu was ever that good. as tiger fans i sometimes think we are in to much of a hurry to see the end of the year record & accomplishment of the team. i try to tell myself to enjoy each & every game for it's own merit.

Factions or not, I just want the folks who sit in those mid-field seats to show up on time and sit through an entire game. I know what those seats cost and I know the argument that they can do with them as they choose (including sell them to Bama fans) but it's truly embarrassing to watch them start to empty out in the second half, even when the game is close. I mean, why go to the game if you're not interested enough to stick around? Makes no sense...(thanks, I feel better)

it seems to me that our two fans factions can be segmented by age.....
Nope. Nice try, but as I've said here before the factions can be attributed almostly soley to personality types. Different people see things differently and react diffrently because of how they are psychologically wired. I believe that firmly. Because I am an admitted "negatiger" and am over 25, by a good bit, and I was a fan way before the Hallman years.

will be 39 this year

- vaguely remember Stovall..
- mostly pleasant memories of Arnsparger. very good defensive teams.
- dissapointed when Archer got the job, although i can't remember who i wanted.
_ i sat in a very empty looking stadium during the Hallman year.. but hey, our players didn't wear earings then.....
- it didn't take long for the excitement/optimism to turn to dissapointment with Dinardo
- i agree with the love/hate with Saban, although i have to admit it was mostly love...
- i also have to say that i have an on again/off again love for Miles as a coach. When i think of the 10.5 average wins per year its on again.....
- I am VERY concerned about the meat of our SEC schedule... If we put it together we could win the West... If we don't improve we also could finish 3rd or 4th in the West.....

I dunno, I've come across a lot of negatively-focused Tiger fans who are just flat-out old, bitter and hateful.

Nothing pleases these people because they're not even pleased with themselves. You can tell who they are when they post.

They think you can't tell, but it's plain as day.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that the loudest voices in the room are the most reflective of public opinion... or what is right and wrong.

My first memories are of the Hallman era and I'm deathly afraid of going back to that, as a result I'm probably overly critical of Miles and the team. Sort of like someone who was abused as a child and develops relationship issues as a result.

i don't see how you can say that. there has been a proponderence of doom and gloom this year. i just got tired of it and i think many share that. once again, when a poster posts doom and gloom, why is it hate if it is challenged. it's like, hey, if you don't agree with me, it's hate. or i can post MY opinion, but you can't.

This is just stuid. I am a college student and cant stand you negatigers who want miles fired and think everybody on the team sucks. I defend the team/players because I am the same age of most of them and I couldnt do half the shite they do and neither could most of you idiots.

I admit I yelled Help Mac Pack. All these years later It was stupid. I was there when we were 7 - 0 and played Bama day on Thanksgiving in 73 and we lost 21- 7. We always lost to the Bear. After Mac we went through some tough times. We all need to apprediate where we have been the past few years, on or near the top.
