it seems to me that our two fans factions can be segmented by age.....

faction #1: under 25, probably a student. espouses doom about coach miles, the asst. coaches, the future of our program.

faction #2: over 25, many over 35. defend miles, the asst. coaches, etc.

i have no waying of knowing if this is accurate unless posters of each faction would state their age.

having said that, if it is accurate faction #1 would have been about 10-12 yrs old or so when Saban arrived and 15-17 when miles arrived. since Saban was held to a different standard than Miles (due to past team failures), faction #1 has known only great LSU teams and as much team success as any team in the country.

MY POINT: 2008 was the first year in faction #1's memory (most kids don't start following football seriously until puberty) in which LSU struggled. this has turned out to be quite an issue to this faction and they want Miles punished for 2008. many have concluded that he's not a good coach. end of story. they are not willing to listen to others because they have made a decision, based on their perspective, that is "obvious" to them. Is the LSU fan rift generational?

Can't really remember Hallman.

Lived through Hallman.

This is how I'd divide it.

I think you're onto something, GrandDad. (I'm not a granddad yet, but getting closer.)

Us folks who lived through years of good but not great teams, occasionally sprinkled with a bad year, appreciate the golden age we're in now. 2 NC's in 5 years, and still people are bitching.

Too many young whippersnappers have unrealistic expectations.

- Went to LSU '88-'93 - one decent Archer season. The rest was mostly crap, but I loved it anyway.
- Wouldn't say I'm a huge Miles fan, but definitely on board
- Had a love/hate with Saban while he was our coach and pretty much still feel the same way
- Very concerned about the meat of our SEC schedule this year due to the perceived weaknesses

Think back to 2002, Saban's third year. That team had several games in which they were just pathetic, such as Virginia Tech, Auburn and Alabama.

1990-94 was actually much worse than this.

Depends on what you call pessimistic. Predicting 3-4 losses is not pessimistic with the offense we have seen yet is deemed to be so by some fans. SOme people, though wary of last year are optimistic that Miles and Co can get this young team to gel.

In truth, very few fans are calling for Les Miles head, and very few fans think JJ is a bust. Ohio State and OU fans equally have their pctg of doom and gloom fans critical of the coaching staff.

It seems that free and open expression of ANY dissenting opinion is viewed as hate.

You know what really bothers me about our fans and other SEC fans in general ... they don't seem to give any credence to the fact that most SEC schools recruit like crazy, have some damn fine coaches, drops tons of money on the facilities, etc.

Yes, we've had solid recruiting classes, but guess who else has over the same time period? Guess who else spends millions on their coaches and facilities?

We can't go 12-0 every season in this conference. Any season with 2 losses or less in the SEC should be considered as "meets expectations" or better with what we've got and what we compete against.

Just my 2 cents...

True - people my age actually use tennis balls for tennis!

You've seen a lot of LSU football in your days. Is there anything worse than the Hallman years?

I think the people who first started to follow LSU football from somewhere between 1998 and 2004 would fall into this faction.

I don't think it's so much generational, as much as it is people coming to really dive into the minutiae of the LSU football program at a time when Saban looked like the end-all and be-all of college football.

People who started following LSU football closely at different times have a different perspective. For example, they might understand that what DiNardo accomplished from '95 to '97 was every bit as phenomenal as what Saban accomplished in '01 and '03, and that what Miles accomplished in '05 and '07 was also way outside of ordinary.

If you don't have an appreciation for McClendon & Arnsparger & DiNardo, then it's pretty hard to understand the wider context of LSU football today as it relates to Saban and Miles. Of course, the other side will just say that everything has changed now, and that CFB is a new world and all that.

Some of it may be related to the "internet generation." Negativism spreads like wildfire, and sensationalism or extremism (both to the positive and negative, though negative moreso) garners the most attention.

And yet, still lose games. Just think, they could be Georgia fans. How happy would they be then?

That was a black hole for Tiger football. Worst era in my lifetime.

I still have vivid memories of watching Joe Labruzzo run all over Tulame. Ah, the good ole days.

Student
I defend LM, our assistants, our players (even Lee), etc.
I will express concerns about what i see, but i won't criticize because they are better than I ever could be
Boo only the refs or other team when they deserve it (stomping on eye, calling out ss, etc.)
Get into the stadium when the student section opens
Stay until the band leaves every game
Not drunk every time i got to the game
I HATE the wave at games
I have bneen a fan since burth (first shirt was a hodson jersey)

sooo.... i don't know which faction I fall into

i think the split is b/w new tiger fans (bandwagon for the most part) and true tiger fans

I went to every single game under Hallman. Just because I saw football at its worst doesn't necessarily mean that Miles isn't due any criticism. I certainly don't think he is a horrible coach, but that doesn't mean I think he is the best around.

FWIW, this was not what I was trying to say, or even so much as imply.

i think so. its the same out here. young SC fans want nothing but titles every year, period. they are going crazy right now that we lost. they werent around when SC sucked so they have no appreciation how hard it is to be a top program
