Are we afraid that the name University of Louisiana will some how diminish our reputation? Do we honestly think people will decide to go to UL because the name sounds more prestigious? Come on people…hold your heads high and stop worrying about such trivial issues. It’s embarrassing!

we arent trying to officially change our name, just to be referred to has UL or Louisiana, hence LSU A&M @ Baton Rouge is referred to as simply LSU...

I can tell you why I'm a bit frosted by it. There are two U. of L.'s, and ULL taking that they are THE U. of L. is a bit forward, as ULM could rightfully make the same claim. ULM doesn't - they just call themselves ULM. Until ULL rightfully petitions for a name change, and gets to legally call themselves U. of L., it is confusing, deceiving, and discourteous to call themselves THE U. of L.. KC (formerly from NELA).

I agree - we know it pisses them off. If they are to be known as UL, what is UL Monroe to be called?

I solve that problem by calling them USL. Damn, does that bother the hell out of them.

It's very simple. They just went and did it without getting permission from the state legislature, as well as it is, was and probably always will be a resgional state university only, no better than the other Non-Flagship Unversities.
Don't you know that in any organization you must ask your superior's permission before you do something that violates the organization's rules or you will be in trouble or fired.

No, they really couldn't. People who make the above statement have no knowledge of the history of the UL(L) name change fiasco.

For those of us who went through school when they were USL, they will ALWAYS be USL.

You can ask people to call a janitor a maintenance custodian, but at the end of the day, he's still a janitor.

USL is more like janitor in a drum.

No! They are not the University of Louisiana and never will be. The state specifically said that both the ULL and ULM could use the University of Louisiana name but had to use the city name at the end.

Only the people in Lafayette dropped that name in order to feel better about themselves. No one else calls them that name.

Any official product for ULL has to have "Lafayette" on it. Now they are good in hiding but you will find it. The hat with "UL" on the front conviently have "Lafayette" on the back. Many times they will but "Louisiana" on the front but in very small letters put "Lafayette" below it. Lettering so small you can barely read it.

So where does ULM fit in to that plan?

WHY Does the name UL piss us off?

As an alumnus of USL, it pisses me off because it suggests that there was something WRONG with the name of the university from which I graduated.

I had this argument with Joey Durel...current City/Parish President of Lafayette back in probably '99 when he waqs still just running his pet stores and was a client of mine while I was at The Advertiser. He was a HUGE proponent of the name change, and it just so happened that I was in his office the day the official word came down and he was as giddy as a school girl. I just shrugged at him. He went on basically ranting about how the name change would mean huge increases in reseach dollars and presitige and would be a benefit to the athletic program. My exact response was, "Honestly Mr. Joey...John Lovitz could change his name to Brad Pitt, but that wouldn't mean he's start banging Jennifer Anniston."

I also dislike the way they remain dishonest in using it. Hell...at the gates of the university on Johnston Street they had this lettering spelling at the new name with a little LAFAYETTE underneath. Students KICKED OFF the Lafayette part and it looks like absolute shite with the holes still there. The university has left it that way...they'd rather it look like shite and read what they wish was their name than fix it and still feel cheated.
