The Fallacy of the Long Pass

So-called fans bleating and bloviating about the lack of long passes in the LSU offense should sit down and shut up. I know, it's the generation of instant gratification and the 5-second sound bite. If you can't say it, hear it or experience it in less time than it takes to fire up your ipod, it isn't worthwhile, and God forbid the LSU offense should play a steady, run and short pass, ball control offense that merely puts up more points than the opponent by, among other things, keeping their offense on the sidelines. Whatever part of the learning curve the offense hasn't ascended yet, the oh-so-exciting long bomb isn't near the top of the list. Red zone offense, sure. Offensive line blocking, sure. Disguising the bubble screen, absolutely. Going bombs away so that for every long pass that hits there are three that are incomplete leading to a punt on fourth down might be exciting for the 12-year-olds in the crowd. But winning ugly is better than losing fancy. So stop with the bitching about the lack of constant 50 yard passes. They're overrated.
