MSY Parking Question

Last job required me to fly at minimum monthly. Always flew out of MSY. Never had an issue with parking. There was always plenty of parking available. I left that job in 2021. Haven't flown once since. My BIL who flies a decent amount is telling me I need to reserve parking at MSY for my trip in Mid May. He said they are running out of parking lately. I refuse to believe this but am I just behind the times since I haven't flown since 2021?

Yes, parking is terrible and you need to be there three hours early.

Really depends when you're flying.
This link will show you current availability but unless it's a holiday, event week / weekend, generally you do not NEED a parking reservation.

I've only had trouble on holiday and other big travel weekends. That said, it sucks to drive to the parking near the airport and then find it full and have to drive over to the other lots ten minutes away then shuttle back. You can easily lose 45 minutes. I always reserve ahead.

I parked in the short term garage this morning, there were a ton of empty spots.

Jazz Fest Monday.
If it were say Mardi Gras Monday, your experience would have been different.
Same for Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, etc

Thanks for the link. I'll keep an eye the weeks heading up. May 15th fly out date. Don't think that will be an issue.

I agree, I don't think so either. Random Friday, kids still in school, etc. you'll be fine without a reservation.

You just need to book your parking more than 24 hours in advance. I recommend setting a reminder for two days before your trip and book it then. There's really no reason not to. The garages fill up often enough that I only pre-book.

Always reserve ahead - it's easy and you never know when the garages will be full

If you plan on parking in Economy and taking the shuttle, no need to reserve a spot. Economy is cheap-ish, and easy, but could need an extra 30 minutes to account for shuttle and drive.
Reserve for long-term and short-term, several times a year on big NO travel dates those will fill up. Reserving a spot is easy, you prepay and they send you a QR code (which you can add to your apple or google wallet) to enter/exit, very easy.

I've had to fly out of MSY at least twice a month for the last 3 years, holidays included. I don't think I've ever had a problem finding a spot. I've had to go to the 4th floor a few times but usually find a spot on 2.

Or, you could have, I don't know, reserved a spot with fewer keystrokes than you've put into this thread.

Good point. But it says payment is non refundable and if something changes you are out the money. Unless I'm reading it wrong.

And thats exactly why you don't reserve unless it's holiday or busy weekend. Zero reason to pay in advance when it's non-refundable.
You're not reading it wrong.
If there was a discounted rate to reserve, okay.
If there was a refundable option at the current rate, okay.
There should be no reason to book in advance but lets just say MSY does something like announces that 4 floors of long term will be closed due to repairs, yeah...checking the availability might help.
Other than that, no reason to give them your money, lock yourself in, remove flexibility when there will be spots in short term and long term the day before and the morning of your travel.

Its so easy, I never do it more than 3 days in advance and only on trips I 100% know I will take. I love not needing a ticket and just scanning the QR code from my phone wallet.
That said any trip longer than 2 days I rideshare now.

I fly out of MSY semi regularly. I've always used USPark at the end of Veterans. I've never had a problem. The shuttle meets you at your car & takes you to the terminal in less than 10 mins. They're usually a shuttle there waiting upon my return.

Wow, never seen that. Parking Spot (IAH at least) only the reservation fee is non refundable, but it's waived if you create a free SpotClub account.

It's not just the flights you intend to take but the flights you can't take because they end up being cancelled.
IRL example...we had a 6am flight on American. Woke up at 2:30 am to see the flight had been cancelled. We rebooked out of Gulfport on American at no additional cost and got to our destination only about 2 hours after we originally planned rather than taking the American reassignment gettting their 6 hours after we originally planned.
Now, had we prepaid for parking, even though it's non refundable, they do honor refunds in most instances but you have to email them and it can be a pain in the arse.
It's easily avoidable and keeps your money protected in your account.
