My neighbor sent me a video of them swarming her porch a few hours ago. I don't have anything here.

They swarmed in Saraland and Semmes, AL last week, which is a week or two early normally for us.

And just walked outside and they're swarming like a mofo right now.

I hate that. I spent the past 2 years sealing any nook and cranny that they were coming through after an insanely bad year.

How far north do you have to go where they no longer swarm. I feel like I only hear about it in SLA around the Northshore and BR.

We don’t have “swarms” in North La (aka East Texas/South Arky)
Is this a spring time thing or all summer too?

I didnt see them in my neck of "mandeville" woods, but they were all in full force near the Times area.
They had them inside the resturant.

You don't see swarms up there because they aren't "there" (yet)

This map from the LSU Ag Center shows reported cases of Formosan termites.

Formosans are a different breed of termite than regular subterranean ones, accidentally imported from China shortly after WWII. Every spring about this time a bazillion come out of the ground, fly around and try to find a new place to colonize. They are attracted to light and can get in houses.

Usually only lasts about a week or two in a given area.

Some tips for those trying to limit the home invasion:

1. Turn out lights. Learn to embrace darkness.

2. If your neighbor is out of town, break into his house and turn all his lights on to draw them away from your house.

3. This one I tried last night and it seemed effective. Turn on all your bathroom vents and let em run until at least midnight or so. The swarmers usually get into your attic pretty easily with all the vents and crap in the roof. Once in there, they'll climb through light fixtures and bathroom vents to get into the living spaces. But they're not strong flyers or crawlers, so sending airflow back the other way will help repel them. I felt like I found less in my bathrooms than usual.
