I know we’ve discussed ad nauseum about how crappy of a coach Jay is but I’m interested in a different side to this. If you personally could assign fault to ONE aspect, where would it lie? Could be coach, players, admin, pitching, in game, recruiting, portal etc. Just if you had to say 1 thing that’s the issue what is it?

I say the failure is in player evaluation. Not necessarily the coaches “fault” but it ultimately lies on the shoulders of he and his staff. But on the other side of the coin you pay these guys to perform and they’re swinging at a ball in Alabama (caraway). Gun to my head for one blame to go around, I’m gonna go with evaluation failure.

What say you?

Of course its evaluation, which is ultimately jay’s responsibility. Im confident he’ll get it fixed for the next few years

Players by far. In all my years watching LSU baseball, I’ve never seen so many dumb arse 8u mistakes made by a bunch of guys who are supposed to be at the highest level of the college game. Our catchers can’t catch, our infielders can’t field, basically the entire team has the opposite of the clutch gene whatever that is, and their swings look janky with weird hitches like moving the bat head until their swings actually start.

I’m usually hard on coaches because they’re the CEO and it’s on them, but I don’t find a lot of fault in Jay with this team. These guys fricking suck

Me too, Josh. That’s why I said it was his fault but didn’t bash him as a coach. I think he’s a phenomenal baseball mind and manager (they all have their quirks and faults) this is his first real instance to have any kind of doubt in him, but I really don’t doubt him at all. I think the ship will be righted by August—yet we will hold our collective breath til February

Jay is now overthinking things with all the pitching changes at odd times. He’s trying to find a winning formula but I’m afraid with this group of mismatched parts and evaluation misses, it’s not gonna happen this year. Glad he’s playing freshmen now and should keep doing it. Find out if you have anything salvageable for next year and jettison the rest.

Pretty much the same thing if said as player evaluation and if I had to put it to one thing, that would be it.

Coaching. Terrible evals and now terrible in game player decisions

Agree. And bad evals are going to happen. Just look at the hit rate of first round picks in the MLB draft. The development of Evans and Schmidt is also a big reason. Schmidt has an SEC ERA of 5.75 while Evans is 6.11. I expected both to make a much bigger leap from their freshman to sophomore years.

I think you have to spend on proven players from competitive baseball conferences. No more chasing one year wonders from mid majors. You need guys with proven stats against really good competition.

The portal guys this year across college baseball weren't as good as previous years. I just dont think this is just Jay not evaluating. We took the best of what was available and they just weren't that great at the next level.

Texas Tech had the #1 transfer class. 22-20 record.

LSU was #2

Ole Miss 3rd 30-12 but 10-8 in SEC

Oregon was 4th

And Miami who is 10-8 in ACC play.

So 3 out of the top 5 didnt pan out.

Is Yeskie to blame at all? He calls the pitches that can't get the 3rd strike...

like last night 3 of the same pitches in a row in bottom of the 9th with 2 outs... batters will catch on

Dardar came from kstate, moore from kansas, carraway from oregon st, thats pretty high levels of baseball. That wasnt the issue
I think jay needs to trust his own recruiting a but more, which seems to have proven to be the case this year. Newer isnt always better, keep finding some portal kids, and lets make sure they can provide help defensively and on the mound, not just power

Would you rather he do nothing?

He just didn’t evaluate them right.

It happens, it’s even more difficult now than ever. 2 titles in three years is unheard of in this current era

We brought in players not as good as the players we tried to replace. And no starting pitching that is above average at best.

He’s done that in past years as well. Not that I agree with it. I question a lot of these pitching changes, but this isn’t new.
