Florio and Simms were laughing this morning about how the pick makes no sense if the McVay didn't want Ty. The only thing Florio could come up with to justify it is if McVay was acting upset so he looks like he is in Stafford's corner.

McVay has threatened to retire for several years now.
I could see there being a bit of a behind the scenes struggle with now vs later. With the GM saying "Yeah we know you want to go all in now because you might not be here tomorrow"

I'm assuming from the GM standpoint he thinks "Stafford is at the end of his career and we are good enough now to win a championship without necessarily needing a 1st round player (in what is believed to be a weak draft) to help do so. If we are as good as I think we are, we won't be picking this high next year. So let's use this as an opportunity to secure our future (somewhat similar to what Green Bay has done)"
It's a reasonable thought...if you think Simpson is a good QB. That's the issue. Rodgers was a good QB at Cal. Love at least had the physical traits of a NFL QB. Simpson was OK with some good moments at Alabama, but not consistently great. He's also doesn't have the remarkable physical traits evaluators look for.

What’s preventing them from competing next year? Who was there at 13 that could have put them over the hump?
And the organization probably wants to continue to contend as well and don’t want to get caught off guard if Stafford retires at the end of next season. Or if McVay suddenly leaves like he’s been threatening to.
They are thinking long-term, as they should. I don’t love the entire thinking, because whether it’s McVey or the next coach, the HC is going to want to have “his guy.” But apparently their front office and scouting dept. saw enough in Simpson to think he can be the successor to Stafford. We’ll see how it plays out.

I think the Rams are thinking we aren't going to be picking this high again with Stafford, and he's got 1-3 years left at best. So get a QB while you are in this unique position.

He was really good before the injuries started piling up, and I think evaluators are finally starting to realize that processing ability is on par with physical ability as a QB trait.
The only guy in the draft that I think head and shoulders projects better than everyone else at his position is Kenyon Sadiq at tight end. He steps in and upgrades a spot. If Mcvay wanted him, I could see him being pissed.
Otherwise there will be receivers available for their round 2 pick that could end up being better than Lemon, Concepcion, and Cooper. I've seen insinuations that they need to get an additional weapon at WR.
That offense doesn't even need a physical freak or a burner or anything like that. Denzel Boston, Germie Bernard, Antonio Williams, Malachi Fields, Elijah Sarrat are all still available. Any of them could end up being the best receiver in the draft, or at minimum the best receiver that was available when the Rams took Simpson. If they want to go tight end, Eli Stowers and Oscar Delp are still available.
If Mcvay had his way though, they probably would have traded the first round pick for a proven commodity, because that's what he prefers to do. He's the NFL equivalent of stacking a CFB roster with portal guys and ignoring HS recruiting. Most GM's are the opposite.
The more I look at it the more I like the pick, if the opposing view is "we should have drafted a WR." None of the guys that were available at WR are any more of a slam dunk probability as the guys left on the board at WR

The Rams' GM has a system and it's worked. They do things differently and are great at drafting. Now McVay is a large part of that, but everyone knows he may leave at any moment.
The rest of the 1st from around that point on was midgrade OL guys primarily. They weren't going to make a huge difference next year except maybe Ione, but I'm not sure if he fits their system.
Lemon and Puka may not be able to play together. Bain is a joke. I'm not sure if Sadiq fits their system. Mesidor is old as shite and still a project. etc.

I said it in another thread, but the pick really doesn't make sense to me. The only thing that kept them from the Super Bowl was JSN. You needed a guy to match him on the defensive side of the ball. When you have the weapons you do, paired with the coaching staff, any QB would want to come in Free Agency

The pick is for a time when Stafford is gone and McVay probably is gone too
I get it but I dont really agree with it. Simpson doesnt really seem can’t miss to me and I think Stafford would have feasted with Kenyon Sadiq at TE
