If so, has it ever been located? Why did it disappear? How big was it supposed to be?

Any Atlantis freaks out there that can provide some insight?

I love the idea, but I have no insights. I think it's compelling.

I do know if there were super ancient civilizations here, time and climate could make it so we could be hard pressed to find evidence. I don't discount pre-calamity civilizations that are unknown to us.

Atlantis is a catch-all term for a pre-deluvian ice age civilization which thrived as a seafaring power prior to the end of the last ice age. The actual location is unknown, but there’s many speculated locations such as the Canary Islands, a site off the coast of Spain, and the Richat structure in the Sahara.

Personally, I believe that the odds of an ice age civilization capable of near technological parity with Republican era Rome, yet leaving minimal evidence in the modern day, to be surprisingly plausible.

The evidence of a truly biblical level cataclysm occurring near the end of the Younger-Dryas is too much to ignore. Massive valleys carved by flood waters from collapsing ice sheets, sea levels rising hundreds of feet inundating millions of square miles of coastline, fertile river valleys becoming seas, huge global temperature swings, “chevrons” and ripple like tock formations suggesting possible mega tsunamis on every continent, evidence of thousands of small impact craters, and a layer of rock suggesting massive fires may have fully deforested the Americas.

The geology is absolutely wild.

The answer is PROBABLY

we have discovered numerous cities, complete with streets, buildings and pyramids, under the waves - some off the coast of Florida

Did humans achieve high levels of technological advancements deep in antiquity?

100% yes - the proof is everywhere

Are there cities that used to be above sea level that are now under water?

Beyond the shadow of a doubt yes - was one of those cities names “Atlantis”?

Maybe - but the idea that a higher tech civilization was lost under a flood is pretty certain

The “eye of the Sahara” looks awfully like what Atlantis has been described and depicted like.

Who knows. If it did exist and was destroyed by natural disaster there wouldn’t be anything left behind to leave a trace.

'twas an Atari 2600 game in the early 80s, good one at that. Beyond, I know nothing.

Yes. It was in modern day Mauritania. It disappeared during the Younger Dryas event when bolides impacted the Mediterranean Sea and a mile high tsunami swept across North Africa.

How big? This big.

More of an OT topic, no?

But on the topic, the Azores ( Randall Carlson ) or the Eye of the Sahara ( Jimmy Corsetti ) are the top 2 candidates.

I'm leaning to the idea that "Atlantis" proper, what we think of, was located in the Azores, and the Eye of the Sahara location was built on a natural formation that had ties to the ancient 'homeland' that was Atlantis.

Just my head canon, no real basis.

Odd that both locations would seeminly be washed away with massive amounts of water though, come to think of it. There are clear indications of flood lines across N. Africa which cut right across the Eye of the Sahara, to the western shores..

Captain Nemo took Professor Arranox to see Atlanis in 20,000 leagues under the Sea. So obviously it existed.

Something like the existence of a pre diluvian civilization has profound impacts on several facets of our modern society. Which makes it political.

I think we should move it to the OT. The discussion will be livlier imo

Nah, the folks looking at the Azores are looking in the wrong place. There were several different gates of heracles back then. The gates of heracles that plato referred to were in the Gulf of Gabes in modern Tunisia. Back then North Africa will have been much wetter and the Northwest portion of Africa will have looked more like an island chain with large waterways cutting through the middle of the continent.

The eye of the Sahara is definitely the place. It matches Platos description of Atlantis like 20 different ways.

I think the noodle baker is all of them could have been pre YD civilizations. I wouldn't assume Atlantis was the only game in town.

This is the Religion Board. You should frame your Threat Title towards those who follow the Atlantis Religion, and ask them for the Theological Doctrine of Atlanteans.

I know that there is an Atlanta, but, that's not the same thing, right?

They certainly weren't. The predecessors to the Greeks beat them in war. Civilization was global in scale back then too same as it is today.

Here is a good video on what it would have looked like back then and why Atlantis is in modern day Mauritania.
