DAT 4/12: Astros (Bolton/SDGAF) @ Mariners (Gilbert) 3:10 CT

Woke up this morning trying to gather my thoughts on how I would feel as an owner/GM of the Astros at this point, taking for granted that I made my money elsewhere and this was my hobby.

I don’t need it to provide income, but it can’t lose money, and the goal would be to increase its value before sale, to be enjoyed by my family as long as they desire after my death.

I’ve already had a historical run for 8 years with 4 WS appearances and 2 championships built through the draft and a couple key acquisitions using a process that the league has now fool-proofed against repeating.

Now, almost every player I have identified as one to invest in moving forward has been a bad move. LMJ almost immediately injured after signing, trying to re-create himself without an average MLB FB or his signature curve that made him effective. Cristin Javier next, and pretty much same song. So now let’s throw in Josh Hader, a loss in the pen that has become catastrophic to its entirety. All of these guys got $19-20 M per for the longest term of any player I’ve signed.

Jose Abreu and Christian Walker also key FA signings. $19-20 M for 3 years late in their careers. One dies on me on the field, the other performs well below career numbers.

I’m able to keep 2 core pieces, Altuve and Alvarez, from championship teams that manage to produce related to their compensation, albeit missing significant time due to various injuries, and I sorta won the lottery on Yuli w an international signing for 5 years at $8 M a year.

All of the other pieces I chose not to invest in went on to under-produce relative to their compensation, and through fate, I was able re-sign Correa at a fair market value. 2 present pieces I have with probable long term value are on the IL, Brown and Pena (finger, now knee).

I traded such a piece with one year of control after he missed half a season fouling a ball off his tibia, only traveling with the team when it went to his hometown. I got 2 everyday starters and a true #5 SP in return.

So, WTF am I waiting on with these other 2 pieces that I have little to no interest in re-signing long term? What do I know about this inevitable lockout that would keep me from moving them? It damn well isn’t that I think my team can make a final run this year.
