"oldies" station here in Nashville plays Relax by Frankie Goes to Hollywood almost every morning when driving my kid to school and I change the station. How did this ever become a "beloved oldie" and how did it get so much endless play in the 80s?
What you got?
ETa disclaimer I had a Frankie say relax tshirt in my clothing rotation in the 80s along with a Vuarnet sunglasses sweatshirt and a coca cold rugby jersey.

Who Are You was played, unedited, for well over a decade before someone caught on...

The little faggot with the earring and the makeup. Yeah buddy that's his own hair. The little faggot got his own jet airplane. The little figgot he's a millionaire.
Thought nothing of it and now in 2026 you have to trick chickens profanity filter to even type that word.

Not on the radio, but MTV used to play the video Prodigy's Smack My Bitch Up late at night. Which had nekkid titties in it.
Before they played it, they had a quick warning from Kurt Loder that the video contains scenes which may be disturbing to some viewers.
ETA: I just watched the video again, and they show way more than just nekkid titties.

There’s a classic 70s soul ballad called Stairway To Heaven by the O’Jay’s. How many times have I read YT commenters say something similar to “How wonderful to have a Christian song on the radio about walking into the Pearly Gates to finally be with Jesus” or “I played this at my husband’s funeral. It’s such a holy comfort knowing he is with his Lord.”
No, lady. This is a song about two people fricking, climaxing & coming together.

I heard this on WBRH ("Rocks...Like a Big Dog") numerous times in the late 80s with no bleeps...

Elton John- Island Girl
I see your teeth flash, Jamaican honey so sweet
Down where Lexington cross 47th Street
Oh she's a big girl, she's standing six-foot three
Turning tricks for the dudes in the big city
Island girl
What you wanting with the white man's world?
Island girl
Black boy want you in his island world
He want to take you from the racket boss
He want to save you, but the cause is lost
Island girl, island girl, island girl
Tell me what you wanting with the white man's world
Well she's black as coal, but she burn like a fire
And she wrap herself around you like a well-worn tire
You feel her nail scratch your back just like a rake, oh oh
He one more gone, he one more John who make the mistake
I see your teeth flash, Jamaican honey so sweet
Down where Lexington cross 47th Street
Oh she's a big girl, she's standing six-foot three
Turning tricks for the dudes in the big city

“Drums beat cold, English blood runs hot
Lady of the house wond’ring where it’s gonna stop …”
And this was 1971.
I read an interview with Jagger years ago in which he commented that they threw everything into that song and almost couldn’t believe they did.

I’m still surprised Lola and Take A Walk On The Wildside made it past the censors back in 1971.

I think the Stones self-cancelled and do not play in concert any more. No stones.

Kind of, but Sympathy for the Devil is okay.
