What’s the functional purpose of the Army and Marines at this point?

Outside of “deterrence”, it feels as if these two branches are becoming completely useless and a giant social welfare program. “Boots on the ground” has become a political stigma associated with failure and a political landslide against whoever deploys troops.

Is there any scenario where the Army/Marines are used on the battlefield in the future? The Navy and Air Force feel like the only functional branches from this point on.

I'm afraid we are, once again, about to find out.

You serious Clark? Few if any wars can be won without controlling the situation on the ground. Blowing stuff up only goes so far. The situation in Iran demonstrates this as well as anything.

As I said in my original post, no one in office is going to deploy ground forces again because of the political stigma associated with it.

Deploying troops now automatically equals an electoral wipeout. No party is going to try it even though it is necessary for our objectives in war.

That may be true for this poorly thought through conflict. It won’t be true for all wars going forward.

I think the days of 'massing' a half a million men along a front are over. We need to focus our infantry type resources on a smaller more skilled fighting force. With regards to 'boots on the ground', if you aren't capable to be trained for airborne, ranger, or special forces type units out you go.

You are seeing the limits of air and naval power play out against Iran. Which is why Trump was a fool to get into this conflict if he wasn’t willing to go all the way, we aren’t winning this war despite what he says.

Is this like a roundabout way of complaining that we aren't putting boots on the ground? Seems kinda dumb.

Agreed. Half-assing it is pointless in the long run.

Short term Iran feels major pain but will be back to full strength within 3-5 years.

When we need to actually win a war they will be the only thing that really matters.

Pretty sure we had boots on ground in Venezuela.

Maybe just for a moment, but they went in kicked arse and left.

Our ground forces are our largest deterrent outside of nukes.

I'll post it again...

Mass coronal ejection/Carrington Event, or widescale EMP knocking out all electronics within about a 1,700 mile radius. A high altitude nuclear detonation can do this while not even causing direct damage on the ground. Set off one over NY, one over Omaha and one over Los Angeles, and the entire US grid is done, and all devices. Throw in a couple more above the northern and southern borders and much of Mexico and Snow Mexico will also be fried. We'd be essentially back to 1950s-60s technology immediately.

In that case, We'd be happy to have grunts that still know how to use iron sights and HAM radios. At the range, I practice with iron sights just as much as reflex and magnification for this reason. Become too dependent on today's tech and you'll literally die without it.

The amount of stupidity and ignorance in this thread is rather impressive.

Not surprising since most of you dipshits never wore a uniform a day in your life.
