I would agree with you if the RCC didn’t give the Pope the titles of Christ on earth. He is literally called the Vicar of Christ.

In addition, the way Catholics downplay the Pope’s non-ex cathedra statements is anomalous to more recent church history. He is to be honored and his statements are to be taken seriously even when they are not considered infallible.

I can’t imagine Christians 2000 years ago saying that the apostle Peter was a buffoon and an embarrassment when he wasn’t teaching infallibly, but that has been the posture of many Catholics over the last few decades.
