Turning out to be different to say the least. I would guess the combination of the season opening later and leaf out are playing roles.

So far I’ve hunted three parishes with the turkeys seeming to be on the same page. Little to no gobbling at daylight with light gobbling mid morning.

Mid to late morning hunts with turkeys coming in slow and silent. When we’re lucky we get a courtesy gobble before they show up.

Only successful roost hunt to date was on youth day.

How’s the season treating you so far?

I’ve yet to go. Have only gotten hens on my cameras the last week and no gobblers.

My son has had a good season so far. Got a rio in south TX a couple of weeks ago and a nice MS bird last weekend when he was home for Easter.

Said the MS bird only gobbled once.

1.5 weeks ago we had a bird gobbling well on the roost. Hit the ground and gobbled a few more times until he finally shut up for good. I ended up finding him around 11 and stuck with his drumming. Followed it to the edge of the property where he was following 4 hens around. Finally got a shot at 2pm.

Last week I heard another in the forest that was gobbling pretty good on the roots. I got excited, misjudged, and got too close.

So basically, 2 hunts with gobbling and about 10 with nothing (besides some farm birds I recently learned the neighbor has).

ETA: I forgot about the douche who parked right in front of us last Sunday and either doubled up or missed, right around flydown. I honestly would not be surprised if he shot them off the roost because it was still pretty early.

its the same time of year - when every year the gobblers go quiet b/c every hen is breeding and courting.

Everyone thinks it's over, it's not.

A turkey is not Jesus. He does not leave the flock to find the one lost hen. He waits for them to come to them.

Every bird I've hunted the last 10 days gobbles some but shuts up quickly after on ground - and then can not pull him off of the hens (unless i have pissed off the hens and they came running in).

The easiest time to kill a turkey in South Louuisiana/Mississippi is the last 5 days of April and Early May, once the hens are set and he is still looking.

Hang in there - the hens will be breed out in about 14-20 days and then you'll kill em. Happy hunting as always

Bad advice. Give it up.

Unless you hunt private… or nowhere near where I hunt… in that case, keep trying.

ETA: downvoters missed the joke

I’m gonna respectfully disagree and say in my experience, the easiest time to kill one is early season when gobblers are still running in larger groups. Exactly why they’ve pushed opening day back.

I agree with you but when they get desperate at the end of the breeding season they get pretty crazy.

The problem is the end of the breeding season doesn't always align with the end of hunting season. This year hens are nesting with many eggs per nest so I think we are absolutely in the "gobbling lull" right now. If it works out the last week or so will be very good. Last year that desperation was the last week of May things were so delayed. Previous year was last week of the season.

Time will tell this year

Killed a real nice one Tuesday in St. Tammany. Gobbled like crazy on the roost but he shut up pretty quickly after fly down. I wasn't sure which way he walked so I just stayed put. He came in silent at 10 and I got to test out the new Mossberg .410. Aside from him I haven't heard any gobbling since the Sunday of youth opener.

Good Friday - Gobbled good on the limb. Gobbled a few times on the ground and cut me off yelping. Heard a hen yelp, he cut her off and never heard or saw either of them again all day. Backed out instead of staying hoping to get a good chance Saturday.

Saturday - Less gobbling. Courtesy gobbled at a few tree yelps. Flew down and gobbled and walked away. Presumably with a hen. Stayed till about 10 to see if he would work back through. Had to leave for Easter family activities.

Completely quiet since cool front

Our turkey this morning didn’t gobble on the limb. Gobbled 3 or 4 times not long after he hit the ground. When we finally got around to him and called to him he probably gobbled 50 times up until the shot at 7:45.

Every day and every turkey is different. You just have to go. Somewhere there’s a turkey ready to respond every day. Just gotta find him.

You're not wrong but, respectfully, you must not hunt a lot of public when there's a Youtube hunter behind every tree in the National Forest/WMA the first 2.5 weeks of season (especially in MS).

by end of April/Early May most of the "hunters" are worn out, pissed off, wife has already spanked em, or limited out/shot a bird.

In my opinion there is nothing worse than trying to work a bird with 2-5 other people running from god knows where to you and spooking the bird. That problem greatly reduces at the end of april/may

I agree, early season birds are easy to kill. but when it comes to the easiest time, in my opinion it will always be end of april/may.

Happy to hunt them whenever we can - i think pushing the season back has been extremely beneficial for our state. Wish Mississippi would do the same.

I've got two boys playing baseball, and I'm coaching one of them. I've hardly been able to go, and the best action has been around 11...after I've had to leave for baseball

Now I realize how much my dad sacrificed with my baseball all through school because like me turkey hunting was his absolute favorite.

This place in North MS used to be the easiest place I've ever been to kill turkeys, and getting one off the limb was pretty much how we always killed them and done by 8. The last few years we've killed almost all of them after 10

This morning was again pretty typical.

Failed to hear a gobble at our first stop. Drove down the road about a quarter mile, got out and a bird was gobbling across the holler.

Yes, in Louisiana. LOL

By the time we walked the almost mile to him he was long on the ground and probably with hens. He was in a ridge top road and at one point I thought I could hear him drumming. We set up in the road and he gobbled at my first yelps. Probably 150 yards away.

Five minutes later I yelped again softly. Nothing. I then waited 10 minutes and yelped. Again, nothing. I let another 10 minutes go by and softly yelped. Nothing. Then I began getting a little more loud. Finally when I cut to him, he gobbled but was definitely going the other direction.

We made a move and setup and blind called for about an hour without hearing him again.

Oh well, they have to win more times than we do.

Headed to Tennessee tomorrow. Those turkeys will make you feel like Michael Waddell.

Saw one 500 yards down a lane around 2 this afternoon. Made a big loop to get in front of him and shot him. I didn’t set up or call. Just barely got ahead of him.
Louisiana season has been a bit of everything. Sometimes gobbling on the limb. Sometimes not until around 8. I only heard one gobble today, but the woods are also getting thicker.

Had one come in quiet on the farm. Hung up at 45 yards and strutted and gobbled a little. He didnt come in and after 5 minutes I decided to take him.
