For those of us who grew up in the 80s, we were blessed with some of the greatest action movies made.

Admittedly, some of these didn't ask for a lot of depth from their actors, so they didn't get a lot of opportunities to showcase how good they really were.

To start the list, I think the first movie that REALLY showed how good an actor Arnold Schwarzenegger could be was Kindergarten Cop. It was the first one I could recall where he was doing a lot more than just shooting bad guys and beating them up (which there was nothing wrong with).

It was also fun watching him act along side kids, and is the source of the "It's not a tumor!" meme.

What movies clued you in on the depth of an actor otherwise known for roles that gave them a chance to really shine?

I'll also take dramatic actors delving into comedy, or comedic actors going into drama (i.e. Jim Carrey in The Truman Show, though he showed some already in Liar Liar).

Stallone in Rocky is the obvious pick here. I thought Schwaznegger was good in Conan too.

I'd say Stallone in Copland.

That one technically works since he was in The Lords of Flatbush before it but I think of Copland where Stallone proved he could really act.

First one that came to mind when I saw the title.

I’ve heard it said that comedy actors adjust well to dramatic roles. I think there’s some truth to that.

John Candy in JFK is an example.

I've always wanted to adopt whatever accent and mannerisms Candy used in that movie.

I'd also throw Steve Martin in here. Not sure there's one movie that shows the transition from one genre to another, but he started his movie career making slapstick comedies like The Jerk, The Man With Two Brains, The Lonely Guy, etc (all of which I loved) and managed to slowly evolve to Roxanne, Planes Trains, Parenthood, LA Story, The Spanish Prisoner, etc, and showed some pretty solid range.
