Black scholarship sued for excluding white applicants

The American Alliance for Equal Rights has filed a federal lawsuit against the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, alleging its Black-only scholarship violates the Civil Rights Act of 1866. The case targets the CBC Spouses Education Scholarship, which has awarded over $11 million since 1988 to students in majority-Black districts. Legal experts say the outcome could influence the future of race-based scholarships nationwide.

The lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for D.C. targets the CBC Spouses Education Scholarship’s explicit restriction to Black students in districts represented by the Congressional Black Caucus. Plaintiffs argue this violates 42 U.S.C. §1981 of the Civil Rights Act of 1866, which bars racial discrimination in contracts, framing scholarships as contractual arrangements. The American Alliance for Equal Rights says the program’s racial and geographic limits unlawfully exclude non-Black applicants regardless of merit or need.

Legal analysts note the case fits a broader pattern of recent challenges to affirmative action, now extending beyond universities into nonprofit and corporate diversity programs. Edward Blum and AAER have shifted focus toward dismantling race-conscious aid, with this lawsuit potentially influencing how civil rights laws are applied to private scholarships. The Department of Justice has also reinforced guidance to ensure federally funded entities avoid unlawful discrimination, underscoring the heightened scrutiny on race-based programs.
quote:
Since its creation in 1988 during a period of shrinking federal education investment, the CBC Spouses Education Scholarship has awarded more than $11 million in aid. The program was designed to address systemic inequities faced by Black students in underfunded schools, offering awards from $2,500 to $20,000. CBCF materials describe the scholarship as providing not only financial aid but also validation and recognition for historically marginalized students
quote:
If the court rules against CBCF, it could set a precedent limiting the ability of private nonprofits to offer race-specific scholarships, even when aimed at remedying historical disadvantages. Similar lawsuits have already reduced the number of race- or gender-specific scholarships by 25% in recent years, according to industry data. The case’s outcome may hinge on whether courts accept the argument that CBC district residency operates as a racial proxy and whether §1981 applies strictly in this context.

What a horrible day when society can't exclude people based on the color of their skin. /s

The only reason this type of stuff is bad is because if there was white only it would be “racist”. We are entering times when no black people under 50 know true racism and hardship. College kids nowadays definitely don’t know shite about true racism and segregation.
It is time to start phasing out the coddling and special treatment of blacks.

There are scholarships offered by whites that are effectively whites only too.
What black is going to win the Swedish American grant?
Lots of Italian and Irish schollies too.

Two wrongs don’t make a right. I learned that in kindergarten. Did you miss that day?

Some of you are misunderstanding me. I am just saying if this lawsuit wins, this stuff should by logic go away too.

The ones based on actual merit.

Martin Luther said he dreamed of a day when his children weren’t judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
Why do you disagree with Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech?

How is a black guy going to win this?

Probably by being part of the approximately 0.1% of their population that is black

I can’t find any grant or scholarship with this name.
Also, the CBC grant is taxpayer funded. Private money is a different ballgame.
