He is a big part of Peter Gabriel’s distinctive style. Try listening to one of Peter Gabriel’s albums and imagining it with a basic bass part versus the unique sound Tony Levin provides. He is one of those artist that are easy to pick out on an album. I was listening to a Joan Armatrading album, Walk Under Ladders, and recognized his bass playing very quickly. (Incidentally that album has Thomas Dolby playing synthesizers.)
He isn’t typically one of the first names mentioned when discussing the greatest bass players, but he should be.

Since Tony has been with Peter since the very beginning, it has to be the debut album.
One of the great things about Gabriel's career is that first hit "Solsbury Hill" has been played at every show.
And you can see how Peter, Tony and David (Rhodes) have been together for longer than most marriages (since David was 24) --

Saw him in NYC Broadway Theater was playing with retread version of UK (sans J Wetton) with Eddie Jobson several years ago and got to meet and greet signed the Stick men CD and got to chat briefly! Super nice fellow and worth all the accolades bestowed on coming from a bass player is some kind of special to watch. Saw the last PG tour in D never disappoints!

People don't really buy music these days but I once told somebody that they could just buy everything Tony has played on and have a pretty decent record collection.

Figured I’d add a song from the Joan Armatrading album that was the reason for my post. Tony isn’t in the video but his distinctive bass playing stands out.
