If you support birthright citizenship...

My question is, why?
I don't mean "because it's in the constitution". Honestly, that's a good reason to support it, and my disagreement with you would be reduced to my not agreeing with a current interpretation of the law.
What I mean is, if there were a real push to change the law or amend the constitution, or if the SCOTUS decided to interpret the current law differently than its current interpretation, why would you fight against such a thing? What's the net benefit to the country? Or even to you personally, if that's your reason for support.

It served well for a time but that time passed us ... oh around after WWII.
It needs an overhaul now. We're no longer needing to build the nation via immigrants. That time is over.

You could say that again we're needing to get rid of tens of millions and replace them with white Christian Europeans again
I got no problem with this.

I’ve always thought it was sloppy legislation from the start. They should have granted citizenship to people who were already born at the time it was passed, not indefinitely.

What manner of jackass would downvote this post ^^

I agree that this is a very fair assessment.

I agree they should be citizens only if the mother is here legally. A citizen of another country that has a baby here either because they are here illegally or on vacation should not get US citizenship for their child. It should only be babies born to naturalized or existing citizens.

I don't necessarily like it. But, then I ask myself, what do you need to do (or how) is one deemed a citizen then?

At the time of their birth, at least one of their biological parents was an American citizen.

What other country should they be considered a citizen of? They are born here. Should another country be forced to accept them as citizens?

This just massively contradicts a the way this country was made

Yeah, like I said, I don't support it but we have to find a way to make it right in the alternative. I was genuinely asking.

I don't support the current use. It's tasking advantage of a loophole that the authors of the 14th amendment could not or did not envision. And I don't give a shite what you lawyers say.

quote:You have to go back and learn why that amendment was passed in the first place. Civil War was over, slavery was abolished. The question then came up, who exactly was a citizen? This all about addressing former slaves and citizenship, not Pablo and Maria jumping across the border, dropping a kid 5 seconds later, the kid is now a citizen, and Pablo and Maria have to stay to care for little Steve Gonzalez.
My question is, why?

Negative. For recognition purposes of the United States government, the child of a foreign national (legal or illegal) should take the citizship of its mother.

Yes, the country of which their parents are citizens.

Make the United States wholly inhospitable and uninhabitable for illegal aliens within the interior of the nation. Slap employers found to be hiring illegals with a $10M fine per individual found to be working here without proper authorization and let's see how many American companies are willing to roll the dice on "cheap" labor.
