with the current console prices rising and PC parts in general rising, I don't see consoles being feasible cheap options for gamers as they once were. The future is subscriptions like geforce now and for stream boxes. that is the only way to keep cost down. nobody is going to buy a ps6 at $1000. that is all

Majority of gaming is done via mobile and console/PC gaming has become a niche market.

Then end of PC/console gaming is the increase in game prices for sub par content.

If I'm Apple/Samsung, I spend the next couple of years working on normalizing/marketing setting your phone into a TV dock (like a Switch) to let people start doing some more traditional console-like couch gaming. Obviously wouldn't work for everything, but I feel like there's a decent number of games that a modern smartphone could push, especially if you integrated a small, quiet fan into the dock to make sure the phone had a little bit of active cooling.

I don't really understand what gamers expect with consoles. They want top of the line parts, but prices that are literally the exact same as what they were in 20 years ago. You don’t get both. The PS3 20gig (not 60) released for 500. Just inflation puts that price over $800 today. I don’t see how it’s realistic to keep that price point off of basic economics.

The NES was $200 in 1988. That was equivalent to 600 today. With what we are getting today, it is a deal.

I think the issue is that, for many years, technology seem to "defy" inflation. The reality is that it was affected by inflation like anything else, but manufacturing/development prices were being driven down as fast or faster than inflation, so prices stayed the same or went down. But now that tech manufacturing has matured, prices aren't driving down anymore (with exceptions like TVs, but that's because they are now being treated as a live service device), so inflation is now extremely plain for everyone to see.

Depends. Nearly everyone needs a PC. I know some people can get by with just a phone or tablet, but that's still the exception, not the rule. So on the one hand, you can look at it as a $2k pc vs a $1k console. Or, you can look at it as a $1k pc plus a $1k console vs a $2k pc. Now it just depends on what's important to you.

Internet service isn't where it needs to be yet to support full on games streaming but no doubt this is where publishers want us to be.

We are essentially living in an age of tech feudalism where companies have discovered that making existing customers continue to pay is much more profitable than a finite number of people buying once and owning forever.

They aren't the same market. They aren't the same product. They don't compete for the same customers or dollars. You can call them the same but that doesn't make them the same.

Nobody is choosing whether or not to buy Candy Crush tokens or the next FromSoftware game with their gaming dollars.

You're right, they're definitely not the same market but my statement is still true. Console/PC gaming is a niche market and will continue to be that way.

Investors look at revenue and will determine where they are willing to put their cash.

Candy Crush revenue for 2024: $1B
FromSoftware revenue: $234M

Meanwhile a GeForce Now subscription is $20/month.

Don't really have time for any of it anymore, but I played probably 60 combined hours of Oblivion Remastered and Expedition 33 on my phone. A good controller and a solid internet connection and the input lag isn't noticeable.

So in 5 years, you’d have paid more for the subscription service than just buying the console, and the console cycle is typically 7-8 years. And we all know the sub price is going to go up during this time.

But what kills Sony in this case is that not only is their console price going to be higher, but they also expect their marks to pay the for the privilege of playing online … this is where PC is the true winner. You get access to the best game sales (or free if you want to sail the seven seas) and not have to pay for a basic service like online play.

The Sony Bros on here would buy it at $2k, and cope like nobody's business.

I looked into GFN recently as I was a little put off by upgrade costs for my PC. It made financial sense in my case, but I still opted not to do it. I'm not giving in. I'll just play old games

Or they will just price out most consumers and gaming will continue to become more and more niche.
