Change my mind

Think of all the very talented teams that have come up short

Two years in a row and duke has gone in as the favorite with nothing to show for it

Some of the most famous teams of all time didn’t win it.

In fact some of those teams are more famous than the champions of their respective tournament IMO

Fab 5 Michigan.

Boogie cousins John wall UK

38-0 uk going down to Frank Kamisky UW who didn’t ultimately win either.

Zion Duke.

it’s just a very narrow path that involves a lot of luck

Every sport only one team wins and the rest loses so what exactly are we quantifying as hard? Easy trot for Indiana football?

Badgers 3-1 this season vs the Final Four teams.....but got bounced in round 1.

It's Madness for sure.

The toughest is definitely this tournament

Hardest is the Stanley Cup

Fairest is probably the World Series. Def season champions get the best set up but they still have to beat everyone

Look at Florida, Chinylu has the worst game of his career and Lee makes two of the worst mistakes in his career at the opportune times and you lose by a point. Thats how quickly you can go from rolling to sitting on the couch.

Well, let's look at the region Duke (overall #1 seed) was in...

Kansas and St Johns matched up in the second rd last weekend, St Johns won by 2.
St Johns then played Duke 2 days ago, game came down to late, Duke won by 5. St johns at times ran Duke ragged.
Other side of that region, 2 days ago you had Michigan State play UConn. That game was more physical than lots of football games I've seen, UConn won by 4.
After getting one day to rest, UConn and Duke matched up, with UConn winning by one.

That's Duke, UConn, Michigan State, Kansas, St Johns... any of which could have emerged and nobody would be surprised.

And that's just to get TO the Final Four. There's still two more games to be won for the eventual champ.

The football playoffs are cool, but you don't get a war zone like that, especially just to get to the semifinals.

I’d put the basketball tourney over the cws/baseball tourney. You can lose multiple games in the ncaa baseball tourney (I think 4 is the highest you can lose) and still win. Basketball, you lose one you’re toast.

That undefeated NBA team that didn't repeat (UNLV) but took a wise guy dive to Duke?...but that's another wrinkle to the Tournament being a crapshoot for bettors.

counter point you’re also playing the same team or two mutiple times. Does a team like UConn beat Duke 2 out of 3? Or Houston last year beat Duke 2 out of 3? Kansas beating Memphis 2 out of 3 etc?

There’s a reason the final 4 are celebrated like the final 1 in other sports. It’s extremely hard to win the whole thing and takes luck along the way.

I think hockey celebrates the “frozen four” but it’s only a 16 team field. Obviously a more physical sport. Navigating a 68 team field is insanely difficult.

It’s so hard that making the sweet 16 is an honorable achievement. Making the elite 8 is damn near impossible for most.

Think about it like this — Arizona last made the final four 25 years ago. Illinois 21 years ago. These are programs with rich tradition and history and enormous budgets and fan followings.

It's wild that Izzo won his championship 26 years ago and the B1G is in that drought.

Depends on whose perspective you’re looking at it from.

The best team doesn’t always win, which means you can win without having to be the best team. Does that make it tougher, or easier?
