Uthmeier said in a video posted to X on Wednesday that the rule "violates Florida law by requiring race-based considerations in hiring." In the letter, Uthmeier asked Goodell to "confirm no later than May 1, 2026, that the NFL will no longer enforce the Rooney Rule or any variation or extension thereof -- which requires consideration of race, sex, or any other prohibited classification -- on teams in Florida. Failure to provide such confirmation may result in a civil rights enforcement action."
Politico reported that Uthmeier also sent the letter to the owners of the NFL's three Florida-based teams.
The Rooney Rule, adopted in 2003, requires NFL clubs to interview two external minority candidates for vacant head coach, general manager and coordinator positions. This offseason, Tennessee Titans coach Robert Saleh, who is of Lebanese descent, was the only minority candidate to land a top coaching job, and no Black head coaches were hired for the 10 openings.

Goodell says, " who are you? I own a day of the week, Miami and Jacksonville don't HAVE to be NFL cities"

There are three black head coaches in the nfl, thats 9.325%
No black head coach has won a superbowl since 2009 (and he was fired this year).
If we are following meritocracy rules for all races......some people need firing.....no hiring.

This guy will be gvnr of FL one day. Way better option than Donald's. Unfortunately to much of a newbie in his AG spot.

I'm sure that would advance AGs politics career, right? Right?

He wouldn’t be laughing at the state prosecution for discrimination or the settlement that would follow.

NFL and its teams are all independent private entities. They can enforce whatever rule they want when it comes to hiring coaches provided they make it an explicit policy.

This Florida man approves of that message.

So that covers the Buccaneers and Dolphins.

I think that the Rooney Rule, and this attempt to invalidate it in Florida, are both just public virtue signaling.
However, this rule should be removed. It only hurts everyone to have rules enforced based on skin color.

But you agree with it....

If the Dolphins, Jags or Bucs are utilizing hiring practices deemed discriminatory by the state they’re located in they can face legal and financial consequences regardless of how they’re structured.
When the FL DEI law goes into effect I guarantee they will be made exempt from the Rooney rule or the rule itself will be changed.

No, the new law is to remove manifestly discriminatory hiring practices.
If you’re against discrimination and race based hiring you should be in favor of ending DEI.

So a private entity can have the opposite policy and it’s all fine and dandy? Not allowed to interview candidates of color?
