Key Details on Using Baking Soda for Fridge Odors:
How it works: Baking soda is a weak base that neutralizes acidic odors (like spoiled milk) and sour-smelling alkaline particles (like fish) by turning them into neutral sodium salts.
Best practices: Open the box fully or pour it into a shallow bowl to increase surface area for better odor absorption.
Limitations: It is not a substitute for cleaning. For strong, persistent odors, you must remove the spoiled food source and deep clean the fridge, as plastic can absorb smells.

Yep. We also used to occasionally be made to brush our teeth with it when we were kids.

The absorption doesn't work the way it's supposed to in a box. It would have to be spread out in a dish or bowl to be effective.

I had an aunt that would put a bit of baking soda in her beans when she cooked them.: She said it cut down on the “gas” considerably. I never put it to the test though.

No, I keep my fridge clean so it never smells to begin with.

Learned something new.

Adding a small amount of baking soda ( 1 / 4 to 1 / 2 teaspoon per cup of dry beans) to soaking or cooking water can help reduce gas by breaking down oligosaccharides—the indigestible sugars that cause bloating. It also creates an alkaline environment that softens beans faster, often halving cooking time

Want super crispy roasted potatoes? Add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to the water when parboiling (about 10 minutes until almost fork tender). The roast in oven with oil/butter and seasoning of choice on 450 until nice and crispy.

Yes, and when I’m done with it, I throw it in my pool to balance the pH level.
