Colbert interpreting Tolkien......this isn't supposed to make sense.

He's a catholic who has made his obsession with Tolkein a key piece of his public persona. This will probably suck (if it ever actually comes to fruition, which is unlikely), but it isn't surprising.

There’s zero reason for this to happen other than politics.

The tweet says Phillipa Boyens is writing as well. She has to be the lead writer. She co-wrote the screenplays for the Lord of the Rings (with Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh) and Hobbit trilogies.

Colbert is listed as a co-writer.

Well, he'll be burning in hell. Sanctimonious hypocrite.

One of the beautiful things about LOTR was John and his son Christopher held control very tightly. Now they'll let anyone write stories in Middle-Earth.

Chapters 3-8? So they are doing tom bombodil. Thats interesting. I dont think Colbert will make it political. He is a LotR nerd.

One of the main 3 that wrote the original trilogy movies is writing on this....

They were going off of source material. They mostly had to make cuts to fit within acceptable screen time runs. They added very little. They are going to be writing this story about Sam's daughter mostly from scratch. Not comparable at all.

First of all, I don’t buy for a second that Colbert is in any sense a legit fan. Fine if he is, but the guy lives his life being something he isn’t and now all of a sudden, he’s a Tolkien fan?

The stories that Tolkien didn’t write are the exact things people don’t want to read. The magic of the elves is leaving middle Earth, and the age of man has begun. That’s not exactly the sort of thing Tolkien fantasized about when in the trenches of WW 1. He knew all too well what the real world is like.

I'm not a Colbert fan by any means, but he is a HUGE LOTR fan/nerd. That's been well documented for years. He's deep in the lore...

I don't know how to feel about this, but more middle earth has me intrigued.
