Stabbing at FL Panhandle Middle School

Wish I was bringing another spring break post by the WCSO, but sadly a 7th grader pulled a knife and stabbed several other students and at least 1 teacher.
My wife (no pics) taught at this school 3 years ago and left partly because the kids were so problematic. Most of the students have at least 1 parent who is incarcerated. She has several friends that still work there and they say it was a very bloodly scene.
I live about 30 mins away, but I avoid Defuniak Springs at all costs. Place sucks...

WCSO INVESTIGATING STABBING AT WALTON MIDDLE SCHOOL; ONE IN CUSTODY WALTON COUNTY, Fla— At 7:22 am, the Walton County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a stabbing at Walton Middle School in DeFuniak Springs. Walton County Sheriff’s Office had a School Resource Deputy on campus, and additional patrol deputies responded, as well as officers from the DeFuniak Springs Police Department. At 7:30 am, a suspect, a Walton Middle School student, was detained a block from the school. Two students and one adult were transported with injuries. Class at Walton Middle School was cancelled for Tuesday. "Our first priority, along with Walton County School Disrict was to ensure that students and staff were safe, the situation was brought under control, and accurate information was relayed to parents regarding reunification," said Sheriff Michael Adkinson. Additional information will be released when it is available. We appreciate the public's patience as we continue our investigation.

Huh, I didn't realize that Defuniak Springs was so rough. I drive through there often. Seems pretty sleepy. I guess there is a lot of panhandle trash around there though.

The Lakeyard area is decent. But the underlying issue for DeFuniak Springs is simple: it's becoming the overflow for the coast. The housing market in Santa Rosa Beach and Freeport is pushing out anyone who can't afford it, and they're all ending up further north. That's changing the dynamic in towns like DeFuniak and Mossy Head.

they'll use any reason to cancel classes: hurricanes, floods, stabbings....
/s/
For once I agree with the cancellation.

That's most of Florida in general. A few miles off the coast and it turns into a third world country.

Ehhhh...those places have never been metropolitan and always been considered pretty fricking redneck. There's just a greater concentration of them these days.

We had an incident in Junior High back in the 80's at my school. Two people ended up getting cut. Guy I was friends with, they guy missed his carotid artery by a fraction of an inch.
We never worried about getting shot back in the day, but knives were always around and getting carved up real nice was always a threat.

I know and work in this area very well. I would say North Okaloosa is worse and it's still not all that bad
Reminds me a lot of Livingston Parish. Very nice areas and a fair share of meth heads on the outskirts. To say most of the students have one-parent incarcerated is utter bullshite, though.

True story: Mossy Head is most famous for having been...uh, terrorized...by a serial goat rapist.
Yes, they caught him. Odd thing was that they couldn't pin a crime on him until one of them died from the encounter. They got him on animal cruelty at that point.

He fricked a goat to death? Are female goats that delicate?

Or at least injured it sufficiently in the process to be fatal.

I'm not ready to assume the sex of the goat.

Well yeah. The county extends up to the Alabama line. I’ve been through both parts a lot. Haven’t seen anything I would consider a bad area. A lot of farms and acreage in the northern part.

Some fun panhandle reads and watches.
Vernon, FL Wiki page - Vernon is North of PCB
quote:
Vernon gained infamy in the late 1950s and early 1960s due to the improbably high percentage of residents who made insurance claims for lost limbs, leading to an investigation of whether residents of the city were intentionally dismembering themselves for the insurance money. These insurance claims from Vernon, with a population of 500 to 800, accounted for as many as 2/3 of claims nationally
Wiki Page - Strip Search Phone call Scam - True Crime Doc about a guy that lived in Fountain, also North of PCB
quote:
The strip search phone call scam was a series of incidents, mostly occurring in rural areas of the United States, that extended over a period of at least ten years, starting in 1994. The incidents involved a man calling a restaurant or grocery store, claiming to be a police officer, and then convincing managers to conduct strip searches of employees (or, in at least two known cases, a customer), and to perform other bizarre and humiliating acts on behalf of "the police". The calls were most often made to fast-food restaurants in small towns.
More than 70 such phone calls were reported in 30 U.S. states.[1] A 2004 incident in Mount Washington, Kentucky, led to the arrest of David Richard Stewart, a resident of Florida.
Netflix Doc called "Don't pick up the phone." Also, a movie was made based off these events called, " Compliance.

Yeah once you pass Freeport all bets are off.
Ironically Walton High up there is far nicer than South Walton despite all the tax money coming from south of the bridge.

shite, you don't have to get very far off 331 once you hit the north shore of the bay and things start to get dodgy.

I saw one of the trashiest things I've ever seen at the KFC at the Defuniak Springs exit off I-10 around 2010 driving from Gainesville to Destin.
I pulled in to pee and get a drink. I noticed a big crowd in the parking lot, and then saw 2 huge white women were fighting. From the size of the crowd, it looked like it may have been a pre-arranged spot to meet and settle their differences ala the OT meet at Sonic.
